Looking for general advice on getting subcontracting leads in WA (Dodge, BXWA, local networking, etc.)

Hey everyone,

I’m currently doing some research on the best ways to get steady subcontracting leads in Washington State, and I’d love to get input from subs who have been down this road.

Here’s a breakdown of the main avenues I’ve identified so far, along with my thoughts/concerns for each:

\- National Paid Lead Services (Dodge / [Construction.com](http://Construction.com), ConstructConnect)

Pros: Lots of big commercial project listings and early data.
Cons: Super expensive subscriptions, and a lot of the leads feel geared toward prime contractors or huge outfits.

\- Public Portal Bidding (City/County portals)

Pros: Direct access to public projects.
Cons: Seems mainly intended for General Contractors bidding on the prime contract rather than trade subs trying to catch sub-tier work.

\- Local Regional Plan Centers & Rosters (Builders Exchange of WA / BXWA, Seattle DJC)

Pros: Great local focus in WA. BXWA holds plan rooms and plan holder lists where you can see which GCs are actually pulling specs or bidding on a project.
Cons: Still requires digging through plan holder lists to reach out to GCs manually before bid day.

 \- Post-Award / Late-Stage Public Tracker Sites (e.g., ConstructPulseWA)

Pros: Free access to recently awarded public projects and lists of prime contractors who won the job.
Cons: Best suited for late-stage trades/suppliers since the prime contract is already awarded.

\- Organic Outreach / Social / Direct Networking

Pros: Building actual relationships with local GCs, PMs, and estimators via direct email, LinkedIn, or local trade groups.
Cons: Time-consuming and slow to build initial momentum.

For those running subcontracting operations (especially in the PNW/WA area):

  1. Where are you getting your highest-yield, highest-margin sub work right now?
  2. Is paying top-dollar for platforms like ConstructConnect actually worth it for a smaller sub, or are local options like BXWA / direct outreach the better play?
  3. What’s your preferred strategy for getting on a General Contractor’s preferred bid list when starting out?

Appreciate any advice or experiences you can share!
