New to sewing, where are some local gems for finding apparel fabric - new or secondhand?
So I’m a wannabe sewist, interested in garment making specifically. I know Jo Ann‘s mostly carried quilting fabric before and that Michael’s sells some now, but I honestly have no more clue where to look to buy apparel fabric. My first instinct is to try the thrift stores to get fabric that would be good for practicing with anyways, so if there are specific recommendations in that regard as to where to find some secondhand bedsheets/tablecloths etc or even just clothes I can upcycle for that purpose, I’d love to know! but also, are there really any stores in the area anymore that just sell fabric, with good selection for garments thats natural fibers? (not interested in using anything like polyester). And I really don’t want to have to resort to buying fabric online until I get a better feel for different fabrics and how they work up.
Also if there’s any kind of community/local resources you could suggest for this kind of thing, I’d love to know. I am a complete beginner but I’ve done just about every other kind of fibre art so I feel pretty confident of my figure-it-out-with-YouTube approach, so I dunno that I would wanna take classes, but any suggestions on some kind of community meet up/bring your own project night for help kind of thing may be useful to know about for the future - even better if it’s somewhere that also sells fabric like I’m looking for!
