Is SJSU really a “dead” commuter school?
Hi everyone,
I am planning on transferring to SJSU in Spring of 2027 to study art. For context, I actually went to SJSU in 2018 fresh out of high school and lived on campus. I remember the campus being super busy, with events happening all the time. The Student Union was also fairly new at that time and was packed all the time. I dropped out halfway through my second year, so I would be applying as a returning student. I will not live on campus this time, and will likely take the bus or light rail. (bc f parking at sjsu)
Recently, now that I’ve been talking more about transferring soon, I’ve heard more and more that SJSU has become a “dead” commuter school with no community. I asked my coworker if he could confirm that this was the case, and he agreed, even adding that the student union is empty all the time now! He said that no one hangs around campus, everyone just goes to class and leaves. I know I could join clubs and try to make friends with my classmates, but even my professor who taught there part time agreed that the students mostly keep to themselves.
So, is SJSU really that dead? Does no one hang out on campus anymore? would love to hear your guys’ thoughts on this. thanks in advance!!
