With Marvel adjusting their printing approach there has been more consumers deciding to shift to preorders. Each website might approach preorders differently so I thought it might be helpful to discuss those differences.

When filling a catalog, Marvel & DC will add books to their distribution sites (Lunar/PRH) before subsequently assigning them to a monthly solicit and designated “Final Order Cutoff”. FOC is when the publisher collects preorder numbers and decides exactly how much to print.

There are some differences as to when these books listed on those distribution websites become available to preorder and sometimes additional discounts if preordered during it’s assigned month.

For sake of argument I’ll be using US retailer websites as examples although other overseas options will often operate similar to what is listed below.

- DCBS operates based on a monthly solicit over a span of 4 weeks of releases. Monthly solicits usually update around 10th of each month.

> For Marvel this is generally omnis 6 months out, trades 3 months out.

> For DC this is generally omnis & trades 4 months out, absolutes 8 months out

- PBC operates based on additional discounts for each monthly solicit, updating on 20th of each month. However, these books remain available to preorder after that final order cutoff on the website unlike DCBS.

- CGN operates based on a flat preorder discount for books from when it arrives on PRH/Lunar to shortly before release.

There are additional differences such as when these sites charge your card when you preorder, shipping orders in bulk vs by order/item, etc.
