Nikon Z5II with 24-70 f/4S and I recently got the Godox Flash V1-Mid. Thinking about 50mm f/1.8S or 85mm f/1.8S

Hi all,

I am a hobbyist. I have the Nikon Z5II with kit zoom lens 24-70 f/4S. I mainly use it for mostly for indoor events, family, kids, occasional trips and may be street once in a while. I love capturing the emotions of people and portraits. I recently got Godox Flash V1-Mid to avoid going to very high ISO in indoor events during nights. My friend suggested that I could add a fast prime lens.

I used to have 50mm on an aps-c canon body (rebel xt) 15 years ago and took some photos which my friends have framed for the candid emotions and the quality of picture. This is also the rationale for thinking about 85mm. I was also analyzing the EXIF data of my photos. I found that I shoot either wide at 24mm - 30mm or at the other end 70mm, and very small photos in between. I have barely shot pictures in between.

My logic is that I could use 24-70 with flash for indoors and use 85mm (outside my current max. zoom) for capturing the candid emotions of people. While reading through the reddit posts, many people have problem with tight spaces and feel 50mm is versatile.

Help me choose between 50mm f/1.8s and 85mm f/1.8s.

Thanks in advance.
