Haiku's Incredible 25-Year Journey Since "Ok, Let's Start"

Andrea has just posted a thoughtful article that looks at all of Haiku's history. Interesting stuff for the curious.

High Magic Breaks Immersion

It seems like the more I play games set in the Forgotten Realms, the more I struggle with immersion. It seems to me like there's a lot of "convenient ignorance" with how if magic worked like in 5e and was as common as it is in the Realms, things would be a lot different.

The material component for Raise Dead costs less than a suit of Half Plate, and 9th-level casters aren't super rare. Healing magic is ridiculously common. Cantrips like Prestidigitation, Mending, and Create Bonfire can have major effects on an economy, and this is ignoring the societal effects of low-level spells and abilities like Disguise Self, Purify Food and Drink, Invisibility, and Continual Flame. It's almost like the only setting that handles this even remotely appropriately is Eberron.

It's really hard for me to ignore these things in a fantasy setting to the point where I've been working on a low-magic campaign setting that addresses it. Am I the only one to be really bothered by this or am I just losing my mind here?

Psychology and Design in Character Sheets [Video]

I just finished watching a video that is absolute gold in terms of usefulness for character sheet design. It's long, but all of the information IMO is useful. I'd recommend watching the whole thing, but if you don't have the time, skip to 29:32 for the Step by Step Guide.

His content is very academic, stylistically, and it pays to rewind and listen to sections a second time, but it's so, so good!
