Siteswap Explorer app updated

Siteswap Explorer app updated

I’ve just released version 2.0.3 of my Siteswap Explorer app.

You can get the iPhone/iPad app from the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/siteswap-explorer/id1549451272

You can get the Android app by joining https://groups.google.com/g/siteswapexplorer. I want to make it fully live on the Play Store, but Google demand a test period before I can do that. It looks like at least 12 people have to use the app each day in the next week. So it would be awesome for me if you join the group and try to remember to look at the app each day!

Here are some of the things I changed since last time I posted:

• The animator handles 0s, 1s and 2s a lot better. There’s still more work to do but it’s getting a lot better

• it now animates face to face passes so they look more like passes

• iPads in landscape mode get a new layout

• if you’re really eager to type numbers in there’s a button that lets you do that in the settings page

• in the passing modes, I’ve disabled 1s and 3s because the fastest pass that makes sense is a 5. So you won’t be offered any patterns with 1s or 3s. If you go ‘down’ from 774 for example, 4 handed modes skip 663 and go straight to 552.

• lots of other little fixes

I hope you enjoy using it as much as I’ve enjoyed making it!

Siteswap Explorer App

I said I wouldn’t do it, but I had a go at making a new app version of Siteswap Explorer. It turned into something I want to share, so here it is!

It’s like the website but it works better and doesn’t need an internet connection. The idea is that it animates siteswaps (two handed or four handed visualistions are available), and it gives you buttons to press so you can explore any of multiple ‘next’ siteswaps. You get buttons that apply to each siteswap, so you can just click things and see what happens. There are no wrong answers.

A new feature that’s not on the web version is sound: it plays a note for each throw, going a semitone higher for each throw duration. I’m not sure if that makes it a musical instrument!

For the iPhone/iPad version you can get it for free from the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/siteswap-explorer/id1549451272

Android is a bit more complicated. The app will only be publicly available when I have satisfied Google’s rules. At least 12 people have to have the test version for at least 14 days. You can get access to the test version by joining this google group: https://groups.google.com/g/siteswapexplorer

Once you join that group, you’ll automatically be able to find the test version on the Play Store. I’ll make it properly available as soon as Google allow. It would really help me if you opt in! It needs a 64 bit Android device.

The web version will continue to be available at https://siteswapexplorer.com

Edit: Fixes for issues with phantom balls on patterns with 0s and 1s should now be available to Android users. An iOS fix is also submitted but will take a little longer before Apple let it through.

A quick demo of the new animator I’ve just added to http://siteswapexplorer.com

It adds animation for four handed siteswap, both for face to face and side by side four handed passing. You can drag the animator to move the camera.

There are a lot of other changes too:

•  if you prefer the old animator (might perform better on older phones), you can force the site to use that for 2 handed mode (but you’ll lose 4 handed modes)

•  Drag & Swap can now preview orbit colours while you drag

•  the chart in two handed mode now lines up with the numbers

•  …and also previews the next pattern while you drag

•  …and you can also drag the chart dots left or right to swap backwards/forwards

•  improved desktop appearance

•  option to make slow motion mode even slower

If you don't get the new animator right away (previous users) you might need to turn it on by clicking the settings button.
