Help with Viceroyalties

I think I grew too big for my britches before getting the viceroyalties law for my empire. I granted several kingdoms before the law was established. Do I have to revoke those kingdom titles now to get them back in order to give them as viceroyalties? Is there a safer way that makes me not a tyrant?

Separately, this is my first time with viceroyalties. Any advice on how to use them?

Pressing claim of revolting sub-vassal and losing them?

I’m the Queen of France. One of my dukes was fighting to suppress a revolt. The revolt leader had a claim on a small independent duchy bordering to the east. On her character screen, it shows that I was her liege. I declared war for her claim on that duchy and won. Now she is no longer a countess in France and only holds the new land as an independent duchess. I thought since she was my vassal she’d stay my vassal as long as it was duke level or below? Please help me understand? Was the revolt the issue?
