Idea of an Android app to track teeth grinding data for my doctor — would love your feedback and experiences!

Hey everyone,

I’ve been dealing with bruxism for about two years now. I finally started taking it seriously about six months ago, got a dental night guard back in February (which I’ve already almost chewed through) and my GP put me on a low dose of 0.25 mg benzodiazepine to help with stress.

Every time I see my doctor, he asks: "Is it getting any better?" And honestly... I have no idea how to answer. I sleep through it, so I have zero objective data to tell him. Someone here mentioned using a sensor headband to track jaw activity, but those devices are way out of my budget right now.

So I decided to build a dedicated app to track my sleep bruxism. The core idea is

  • Record audio through the night and automatically detect/clip only the grinding/clenching episodes.
  • Log the exact timestamps, frequency, and total duration.
  • Generate easy-to-read graphs and exportable audio clips to bring directly to doctor/dentist appointments.

Before I get too deep into the code and algorithm design, I’d love to learn from your experiences so I can make this actually useful for others in our situation:

  1. Duration & Frequency: If you track it or have a partner who notices, roughly how often/long do you grind during a single night? Is it steady grinding or short bursts?
  2. Medications & Treatments: Are you taking anything (muscle relaxants, low-dose meds, magnesium) or using specific guards where tracking progress would actually matter to you?
  3. Pain correlation: Would logging morning jaw/neck pain alongside nightly audio data be useful for spotting patterns?
  4. Feature Wishlist: What features would make an app like this genuinely helpful for you
  5. Patterns & Audio: If you’ve recorded yourself before, what does your grinding sound like (clicking, squeaking, chewing sounds)? Any nuances I should keep in mind for sound classification so it doesn't trigger on blanket rustling or breathing?
  6. Existing tools: Have you used an app that already does this well? (I know general sleep/snore trackers exist, but none seem tailored specifically for bruxism data reporting).

Any advice, personal data, or feature ideas would be super appreciated. If there’s enough interest, I’d also be happy to share an early APK/beta build with anyone who wants to test it once it’s ready

Thanks
