Stay away from Shibuya
Imma have to say it: just stay away from Shibuya.
I’ve been to Japan regularly since 2005 and have lived there for a few years at one time. And Shibuya has always been crazy. But last week was the first time in years I went to Shibuya, and omfg, it’s living hell now. To be clear, I’m talking about the area northwest of the station, the infamous Hachiko exit, scramble crossing, and the shopping area beyond. It’s basically Disney Land on a busy holiday. It’s virtually exclusively foreigners, streets so crowded you can’t walk faster than a snail’s pace, and basically nothing worth doing there.
At this point it’s just famous for being famously crowded, which makes it even more famously crowded. I crawled around the block once and then noped out of there.
Don’t waste your time there. Go somewhere actually nice. Shibuya isn’t Japan anymore. If you want to actually see Japan, it’s not there. The only thing you can experience there is dreadful over-tourism.
