Catching military airfields? Monaco method doesn't seem to work

I'm trying to complete the UK, but I'm struggling with RAF bases and small airfields - any tips, or is it just a waiting game?

Tried Monaco method both in and out of radar range with a variety of aircraft types, but no dice. Planes either vanish, or show 'landed' with no destination.
