New Raspberry Pi Digital Photo Frame with Immich v3.0.0 Sync

Hey Immich Community,

I've had a DIY Pi 2 photo frame on the wall for almost 10 years now running an old version of Kodi and thought it was time for a refresh. I couldn't find an existing project that ticked all the boxes, such as a web interface, video playback, and transitions for both video and images, so I had a crack at doing my own.

The aim was to make it really easy to get your photos and videos to it, make it look good on the wall, and no editing of config files, it's all web UI. You can configure as many Immich v3 albums as you like, the frame syncs them at an interval of your choice and also transcodes any images or videos down that are too big for a Pi 2 or 3 to play.

If you have a Pi based frame already or keen to look at making one, check out Metixel! It's a 10 minute install via flashing an .img file, create an Immich API key, add 4 permissions and it's up and running. You'll need a Pi 4 or 5 for 4k playback and a Pi 2 or 3 is fine for 1080p, 1GB of RAM and above and you'll be fine.

A brand new digital photo frame app for Raspberry Pi 2 and higher

I've had this DIY photo frame on my wall for roughly 10 years running Kodi on a RPi2 with an old monitor mounted behind it. It was time for a bit of a refresh and looking around there aren't too many software options that tick all the boxes. PicFrame was the best I found but I wanted more functionality and a web interface so I spent the last couple of weeks building Metixel.

I've tried to make it as user-friendly as possible and short of flashing the .img to the SD-card, it works out of the box and has an Access Point and Captive Portal to configure Wifi so you don't need to plug in a keyboard.

It has smooth transitions for photos and videos, transcodes 4k videos down to make them playable on RPi 2 & 3. It also syncs albums directly from Immich v3.

Keen for you all to try it out.
