Brodes and Rowy
Like a lot of you, I’ve been feeling completely flat and frustrated about the recent news. It’s incredibly disappointing and disgusting when players who tear it up on the field turn out to be massive fuckheads off it. It makes it hard to still support the club in the same way.
Just thought I'd share a couple of the teach us consent podcast episodes, where Grundy and Rowbottom appeared on as guests. I think it’s worth highlighting the guys at our club who are actively using their platforms to challenge toxic behaviour, promote a better culture, and advocate for healthy relationships. Both Brodes and Rowy at least appear to be trying to break down the worst parts of standard footy-bloke culture. As an example of this, they both appeared on episodes of the Teach Us Consent podcast, they’re a pretty good reminder of what leadership in men's sport is supposed to look like.
Teach Us: How Gender Expectations Can Cause Harm (Brodie)
Teach Us: How Porn And Algorithms Influence Us (Rowy)
Teach Us: How ‘Harmless Jokes’ Normalise Harmful Behaviour (both Brodie and Rowy)
I've seen a few fans asking who they can role model to their children and themselves. If the recent headlines have made you (rightfully) uncomfortable/mortified about the players your kids look up to, I think its more useful to talk about it than to avoid the subject. Maybe its a good idea to look into the work that Brodes and Rowy do (I hope that other Swans/AFL players do similar work).
Being a great footballer doesn’t automatically make someone a good role model. It’s worth showing kids that there are players they can admire both for what they do on the field and for how they conduct themselves away from it.
Supporters don’t need to pretend every player is a saint, and it's good to see that we have all condemned abhorrent behaviour even if they are a Swan. We should absolutely make a point of recognising the players who represent the standards we actually want associated with the club, and I hope Rowy and Brodes are these players that the club can rebuild their culture around.
