DUDS!

After waiting over a month for my order to even be picked, I finally received my Herbies order last week. So far I'm 2-for-2, 100% duds.

I still have other beans to work through and good ones from my own seed-stock on standby, but it's just damn disheartening when the 1:1 genetics you were super fixated on go belly-up.

*SIGH*

I may have just stumbled upon a calibration “hack” for the cheapo hygrometers you can get for a few bucks per pop from Temu and TradeMe.

I have two such hygrometers that I wanted to use to prove to myself that a “pretender” knock-off grove bag from China did not actively manage the internal environment. The two hygrometers had previously been calibrated using the salt method, and had values of 81rh and 77rh. I placed them into the fake grove bag with a moist paper towel at 18c, and sealed the bag. As expected, both hygrometers shot up to 99%. I left the bag for 24 hours to see if the internal rh dropped at all. As expected, no movement occurred and both hygrometers remained at 99% for the duration.

Here’s where it got interesting – when I took the hygrometers out of the bag, within an hour they had both settled to the exact same ambient reading of 58rh. Over the next two days, every time I looked at them they showed the same rh.

I’m currently running a second “salt method” calibration on them both, and while they both still seem to be reading high values, they are still consistent with each other (~1%rh after the first 2 hours of starting the process).

Has this already been done? Does anyone else have the time and opportunity to try to repeat this observation? Honestly, I’m kinda hoping I might have just turned a $4 Temu hygrometer into a $10 dollar one ;)

I’ve ordered another 4-pack, and I plan to try again with a larger sample in the future.

I'm about to order some 50:50 seed from Herbies ... anyone know of better stores? Or closer ones?

Also, I'd love to hear what their "stealth" shipping looks like...
