History of Observatory?
Does anyone have a solid history of Observatory? Wikipedia isn‘t really giving me what I’m looking for.
I know it wasn’t technically classified under the Group Areas Act, but I’ve never heard of any older POC growing up there - only middle class white people. As an example, I have family from Mowbray pre-GGA, Salt River, Woodstock as a POC. All surrounding areas. But no one’s ever mentioned Obs. I’ve very rarely heard it mentioned in any history of Cape Town.
But I have heard it was a working class area, which I just don‘t think is true, unless it was largely white working class people? Reason being all the families I know who were there under apartheid were middle class. I understand mixed income areas but nothing I’ve seen or heard lines up with this idea.
