Any historians able to corroborate what Speidel says about Doc Maynard?

I’ve been doing some research on David “Doc” Maynard and loved reading Bill Speidel’s books on him, but I recognize that most consider his works to be “historical fiction.” Are there any historians out there who have tried to confirm anything about Doc’s life before he left for California? I found Doc and his family in the 1850 Ohio census, but nothing earlier than that. Even this was surprising to me, since the census was taken Sept 9, 1850- several months after Doc's journals show he had already left for California.
Any insight is appreciated!
