I'm working on a new free/open source 3D character and scene design tool and looking for feedback

I'm part of a small team that's working on building an entry level, free, open-source 3D character and scene creation tool called PoseStudio.

The current available tools for 3D character and scene design is generally either robust, but intimidating to new users who don’t have a background in 3D design, or they’re easy to use but also frustratingly outdated, buggy, and limited in scope.

We are starting PoseStudio because we want there to be something that is both free/open source, and high quality. We want to create a 3D tool that is modern, reliable, easy to use, and will continue to be shaped by the community it belongs to.

We're building Pose Studio using the Vulkan API rather than Open GL for the sake of cross-platform compatibility, but we’re still figuring out the workflows, UI, roadmap, etc. Feel free to check out the repo.

If you’re interested in being involved, we have a lot of testing, dev, and general tasks we’re going to need help with.

We’re also seeking feedback on:

  1. What would make something like this worth trying for you?
  2. What features matter most early on: posing, rigging, animation, asset import/export, UI simplicity, documentation?
  3. What issues  have you experienced with existing character workflows?
  4. If you’re a developer, is the repo/contribution path clear enough to jump in?

We’ll be hosting a BTS screenshare livestream on our Discord server This Thursday, 7/2/26 at 11 am ET to demo what we’ve got so far, take input, and answer questions.

Looking for Feedback on a new free, open source 3D Character Design Software

Hi everyone,

I'm part of a small team building PoseStudio, an open-source tool for creating, posing, and eventually assembling 3D characters and scenes.

A lot of character software today is either extremely capable with a steep learning curve, or easier to pick up but older, harder to extend, and limited in what it can do. We're building PoseStudio because we'd like to see a modern, dedicated character tool that's open source, dependable, and shaped by the people using it.

The project is still early, but the GitHub repo and website are live, and we've mapped out the core roadmap. We're building on the Vulkan API to support multiple platforms while we continue working through the UI, workflows, and long-term direction.

We're looking for contributors who'd like to help with development, testing, documentation, or other parts of the project. We'd also really appreciate your feedback.

A few things we're curious about:

  • What would make you interested in trying a new 3D character and posing tool?
  • Which features would you want to see first: posing, rigging, animation, asset import/export, UI, documentation, or something else?
  • What's the biggest pain point in your current character workflow?
  • If you're a developer, does the repository make it clear how to get started?

We're also hosting a casual screen-sharing session on our Discord on Thursday, July 2, where we'll walk through the current UI and demo some of what we've built so far. If you're interested in the project or have ideas you'd like to share, we'd love to have you join us.

Working on PoseStudio - free/open source 3D Character tool and want feedback

Hi everyone!

I'm part of a small team developing PoseStudio, an open-source application for creating and posing 3D characters, with scene-building planned as well.

We've found that many existing character tools fall into one of two camps: they're either incredibly capable but have a steep learning curve, or they're approachable but feel dated, difficult to extend, or narrowly focused. PoseStudio is our attempt to build something modern, flexible, and community-driven.

The project is still in its early stages, but the GitHub repository and website are already online, and we've started laying the foundation. We're building on the Vulkan API to support multiple platforms from the start, while we continue refining the UI, workflows, and overall direction of the project.

We're looking for people who'd like to help shape the project, whether that's through development, testing, documentation, or general feedback.

A few questions we'd especially love your thoughts on:

  1. What would convince you to try a new character creation and posing tool?
  2. Which features should come first: posing, rigging, animation, import/export, UI, documentation, or something else?
  3. What's the biggest frustration in your current character workflow?
  4. If you're a developer, is the repository easy to understand and get started with?

We'll also be hosting a casual screen-sharing session on our Discord server on Thursday, July 2 to show the current interface, demonstrate what we've built so far, and talk about where we're headed. If that sounds interesting, we'd love to have you join us and share your ideas.
