I hate this pool. I’m only here 1-2 times per week thankfully. The other guard is here 5-6 days a week and I fill in on their day off. The pool is old and gross. Every time I’m here I have to spend a full HOUR brushing the bottom and walls of the pool because there’s so much green! My other pools don’t get green like this where every square inch needs to be brushed daily. The water chemistry is good; pH is 7.2 and chlorine is kept at 2.0-3.0. Even if I did a chlorine shock it wouldn’t help because I think the filter is the problem. I honestly don’t mind brushing or vacuuming, because time goes by faster, but this is excessive and annoying.

Cherry on top is there’s flies that bite. Like 2 or 3 different sizes of flies that land on me and bite me, from fat green horseflies to tiny no-see-ums. This pool doesn’t allow food in the pool area, but every time I come there’s half rotten food in the trash bin which doesn’t have a lid. That obviously attracts more bugs!! I wear long sleeves and bug spray on my shift and they still get me! One bit my neck last week in true vampiric fashion.

There’s literally nothing I can do to improve the pool and my lifeguard company isn’t responsible for buying equipment or repairs. The property owners don’t even want to buy a new net attachment when this net has a huge 1 inch hole that makes it impossible to use. I bought my own net attachment that I bring with me to my shifts. It cost $20. The pool is like 40 years old and falling apart. The pool tiles fall off. The pool leaks. The pool is green. No one comes to the pool. Everyone thinks it’s gross. I’m just here alone all day. Even when it was 95F I had only 5 patrons in total.

At this point, I just want to turn off the chlorinator and make the pool more green. Turn it into a nice pond for the flies and frogs. Maybe throw in a lily pad and some duckweed. Because who tf is this pool benefitting?

How to do rain dance that actually works? 🌧️ 💃

I’m doing the one where you have your feet far apart, like a sumo squat, and you jump from toe to toe, while gesturing toward the sky. I’m using the DPD powder containers as rain sticks.

When I went to bed last night, I was promised 75% chance of rain today, so I thought my shift would be cancelled. I woke up to no rain forecast. None. Zilch. Fever dream. It’s 1pm and I spent the last 2 hours dancing. Now it says 25% chance of light rain at 3pm. I think it’s working?

I want to go home.

It’s cold, 72F, windy, the pool is outdoors and not heated, my phone is on 20%, I’m scheduled to be here until 8pm.

I’m open to suggestions. Any tips on interpretative dance to help the clouds feel less shy about raining? I need some rain please, send it my way, please ~ shakes dpd container vigorously ~

Edit: I decided to add a chant “rain, rain, come my way, I want to go home early today!” Then the rain forecast went down to 10% chance so DO NOT DO THAT CHANT the clouds don’t like it 🤷‍♀️

Edit 2: zero rain for 3pm now, but 15% chance at 4pm and 10% chance at 5pm and 6pm. The clouds seem to like it if I just sit here quietly and cry? I think my tears are inspiring them?

Spot the chewing gum in the pool.

I haven’t been at this single guard outdoor pool in about 2 weeks. The residents always complain that I’m the strict lifeguard because I don’t let their children do backflips into the 5ft deep end. Among other things, I don’t let them chew gum in the swimming pool. I’m sooo mean I tell the kids spit their chewing gum into my hand so I can put it in the trash without them needing to get out. I’m attentive enough to notice that they’re chewing gum and that pisses them off. Regardless of my vigilance, I still have to clean up gum stuck to the underside of lounge chairs fairly often after one specific group of teenage kids. The other lifeguards don’t do it and leave the mess for me. Finally there’s gum stuck to the bottom of the pool. I tried to brush it off to no avail. I’m going to have to go in the water and scrape it off somehow but it will likely damage the paint of the pool bottom. So basically nothing new, everyone hates me, I’m the only guard that follows rules, and I get no support from management. Fantastic.

Anyone else notice kids can’t read an analog clock? ⏰

At the single guard swimming pool, I call everyone out of the pool for a 10 minute break, for the last 10 minutes of every hour. So on the “50 minute mark”. The break is for chemical testing, chemical adjustments, and for me to take a break from scanning.

I first lifeguarded about 13 years ago and the kids were able to read the analog pool clock to know when break is coming up and when it’s close to over. There was always some attention seeking kids who wanted to follow me around, interested in the testing kit, etc.

I took a break from lifeguarding after Covid. I came back to lifeguarding and there’s a digital clock at most indoor pools but only analog at outdoor pools. Kids at every pool seem to be unable to read an analog clock. They ask me over and over again when break will be or when it will be over and it got to the point that I was using my 10 minute breaks to teach the kids how to read it (they didn’t know hour hand [shorter] vs minute hand [longer]).

The majority of kids 5-16 can’t read an analog clock, younger I wouldn’t expect them to, and older will just check their phones instead of asking. It’s definitely the majority of kids, but like 1/5 kids are able to read a clock, I think most parents aren’t concerned, but it’s a big pet peeve for me that they keep asking me when break will be over when I have a 10 hour shift, anyone else?

People have NOT forgotten KKH - posted July 28th 2026

Why am I buying stupid dragons for merging?? Most of them are not even cute!!! Additionally, I tried the influencer story game last year and spent sooo much money just to hate it. I need my KKH back. They had the perfect balance of addictive and competitive. Micro transactions suck but they used to be optional…. The games now are like peak end-stage capitalism. I want to play KKH when the new season of Kardashians comes out. We need a petition, a protest, and someone in a Cassio mascot suit

Taxation without Representation. I need someone to explain how Flock can exist from taxpayer money w/out taxpayer approval?

From the installation, to the maintenance, to the data storage, Flock is receiving tons of money from the local governments to be able to operate.

Why can the government agree to buy all this crap without taxpayer vote? Like this is legitimately a big expense and change of life. Why are there no guardrails?

My town doesn’t have flock. Only 1 out of 3 towns that border my town have flock cameras. Why are people targeting individual cameras? Like isn’t that just wasting more tax payer money? Is it because it gets more views?

Shouldn’t we be encouraging people to check their representatives? Like who the hell signed off on Flock in YOUR area? In my town, the representatives represent the people well and understand that we’re against it. Who is your representative? Whose signature allowed your taxpayer dollars to go to flock?

Wouldn’t it be more impactful to go after the PEOPLE who approved flock?

I think the flock camera vandal videos are funny but if the goal is to protect us from mass surveillance, shouldn’t we ultimately be looking into the laws and systems in place that allow our taxpayer funds to go to Flock rather than targeting Flock cameras or Flock itself???

Raising minimum wage does not hurt small businesses. Share specific examples please!!!

Minimum wage has not kept up with inflation. Minimum wage needs to be raised in pretty much all of the United States to be a livable wage. Opps say “it will hurt small businesses because they can’t afford staff so they have to shut down”. That’s fear mongering.

Here’s a specific scenario I really want to share

Down the street from me is a convenience store owned by an older Indian fellow. He or his wife have been at the front counter every day for 20+ years. They never hired full time staff, until now. Now they’re older in their 60s, so as of this year they hired full time staff and are never seen at the front counter or even in the store anymore, although they’re still the owners.

If we raised minimum wage, the nice elderly Indian fellow might have to go back to working the front counter. *Boo hoo.* Although I think he’s a kind and hardworking man, it’s not fair for him to continue getting rich off labor of others.

Since he is too elderly to continue working, and he cannot afford to pay staff a livable wage, he will have to sell his business. That is a great compromise for everyone!

The convenience store is in a great location (private parking, near a busy street, no close competition). He will easily be able to sell the business for 1 million. He can then take his lump sum severance payment, put it in s&p500 and live the rest of his life comfortably retired. Furthermore, it gives an opportunity for another younger person to buy the business and become a business owner. The community will not suffer from the transfer of ownership. Win-win-win

When people fear monger “raising minimum wage will hurt small businesses” they are prioritizing longtime owners’ wealth over the greater population and encouraging wealth disparity. The American Dream is not having your feet propped up on the ottoman, as a small business owner, while your worker bees do the entirety of the actual work. That’s not a dream, that’s exploitation.
