On This Day in Kentucky History: The Battle of London

On August 17, 1862, Confederate cavalry attacked Union troops in London, Kentucky. About 500 Confederate cavalrymen attacked roughly 200 Union soldiers and 98 convalescents. The Union force was pushed back toward Cumberland Gap.

On this day in Kentucky history. August 13th, 1919. The legendary Thoroughbred Man o' War—foaled near Lexington—suffered the only loss of his storied career. He was beaten by a horse named Upset in the Sanford Memorial Stakes at Saratoga Race Course after a troubled start.

In 1948, WKIC advertised The Big Radio Show, held live at the old Perry County Courthouse in Hazard. Admission was 50 cents to watch the broadcast in person.
