Rage Against the Monoculture

I’ve just realised that almost every laptop and desktop in my house runs a different OS.

Gaming desktop #1: CachyOS
Gaming desktop #2: Manjaro
Laptop #1: Fedora (the one I use for work)
Laptop #2: Manjaro (the one my wife uses for her work)
Laptop #3: Linux Mint (still in testing after five years)
Laptop #4: EndeavourOS

Pretty mixed environment. Most systems have been running the same distro for 5–6 years now (with regular updates). But does that mean I’m finally done distro-hopping? Does it even count as hopping if you never leave?

Vanilla GNOME - who actually uses it?

I'm just curious: how many people actually use GNOME in its 'vanilla' form?

By vanilla I mean GNOME pretty much as intended by its developers — no extensions, no shell tweaks, no modifications designed to make it behave more like Windows, KDE, or a traditional desktop.

You install GNOME and basically… leave it alone. Is it even possible?

It’s interesting because the GNOME developers impose a somewhat different philosophy on how a desktop should be used. In my case, it turns out I have to adapt that philosophy to my own standards and needs :)

So, are you in the same boat as me or have you actually managed to unlock the full potential of vanilla GNOME?

I’m not asking whether GNOME is good or bad. I’m more interested in how different the GNOME that people actually use is from the GNOME designed by its developers.

Plymouth themes with an EndeavourOS touch?

Hi,

I was getting a bit bored with all that text scrolling across my screen during boot (I don't read that fast anymore), so I installed Plymouth. But there are very few, if any, EndeavourOS-themed Plymouth themes available.

How about some Plymouth themes with a proper EndeavourOS touch then?

Nothing too flashy — perhaps the EndeavourOS logo, a subtle EOS-inspired design, or something that gives you that little “yep, I’m booting EndeavourOS” feeling before the desktop appears. 😄

Has anyone already made something like this? Or maybe you have some ideas for a theme - or know where I could find one?

CalibRaw 1.0.0 RAW Photo Editor

Hi,

CalibRaw just got its first release :D. CalibRaw is a fully GPU-accelerated RAW editor focused on providing a smooth editing experience.

LLMs were used in creating this program.

Over the last 3 months, I tried to create a RAW editor that focuses on performance and a good workflow. I tried several other editors but never had the experience I was hoping for. Either the UI was complicated/not my kind of workflow, the performance was bad (especially on linux), or it was just a buggy mess.

CalibRaw has most of the editing controls like sliders, curves, and color wheels as you know them, but also has optional AI masking for subjects and objects (fully local).

I'd love to get some feedback on how it runs and if the editing workflow feels good.

(it should run good on lower end hardware too, just the AI Masks may take a bit longer to load)

CalibRaw focuses mainly on Linux and Android support, but has Windows releases too. MacOs actions are implemented as well, but I haven't been able to test them yet.

Feel free to ask any question you have :D
