A bike store for normies?

It seems there are a lot of bike stores around, but the few I've gone in all seem to be geared to a single brand, or all mountain biking, or just seem...complicated. It's intimidating. I also don't want to spend $4K on a 2lb carbon fiber space vehicle.

I just want a bike I can ride with my family, mostly on paved trails, sometimes on gravel or well-groomed paths. Maybe ride from eastside into Seattle every so often. And I'd prefer to spend around $1K or less, but could go a little higher for a good reason.

Any recommendations on where to go that would fit the bill?

Preferably somewhere that would give me some guidance, do a fitting, make sure I get the right bike for me.

‘Disclosure Day’: John Williams Recorded Two Hours of Music Over a Six Month Period for his 30th Collaboration with Steven Spielberg

Things we learn:

  • Way more music recorded than in the film (somewhat usual, but the ratio is large).
  • Spielberg has asked Williams to do his next movie (likely a Western)
  • Williams conducted much of the music, assisted by some of his usual collaborators.
  • Williams was given extraordinary timelines to work on the score (6 months!), to work around his current logistical abilities.

This was his high school in the 40s. Very cool! You can read a lot about his experiences there in Tim Greiving's biography.

My 9-year-old is reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway to me as part of bedtime. It's maybe the 3rd one he has read to me or his mother.

These books have done nothing but induce anxiety in me. It's like some form of second-hand embarrassment or trauma. This specific volume describes a family vacation tropical getaway, and from the moment they get to the airport, through the whole plane ride, into the resort... it's just a laundry list of every single possible thing that can go wrong or mildly annoying...or even significantly annoying. The seats between a couple with a baby, the bathroom, food poisoning, booked up resort activities, pests...

Take any and every stereotypical situation, and this book just launches itself through them one by one in an epic saga of incompetence, annoyance, bad luck, poor planning, logistical difficulty, inconsiderate people, or bad karma. It's the vacation from Hell-Lite--just stressful enough, but not life-threatening.

My son loves them, but I can't take it anymore! He finds them hilarious, and we're getting heart palpitations!
