Roman-Egyptian fusion in the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa, Alexandria

Carved in the 2nd century AD (mainly Antonine period), the Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa are one of the best-preserved examples of cultural syncretism in Roman Egypt.

Egyptian gods (especially Anubis) appear in Roman military dress, while the architecture mixes Greco-Roman columns, pediments, and decorative motifs with traditional Egyptian funerary imagery. The complex originally served a wealthy family and was later expanded.

The famous spiral staircase leads down to the main tomb chamber, where the blend of styles is most striking. One of the most impressive Roman-period funerary sites in Egypt.
