Alternate ending idea
Just finished Disclosure Day and have thoughts (spoilers)
Overall I liked it. The pace was good and there was real heart to it, more than I expected going in. But the ending kinda lost me.
It just fell flat. There was no real payoff and no new information by the time the credits rolled. You sit through the whole build up and then… that’s it? Felt like a show and tell of some alien more than an actual ending.
The other thing that bugged me was the whole “we have to get on the air” plot. Why was that the move? It felt arbitrary. The crypto expert character clearly had the means, couldn’t they just find a way to spread it over the internet instead of needing a live broadcast? The movie never really sells you on why the airwaves specifically.
Honestly I think there’s a better ending sitting right there that ties the whole thing together. Instead of Emily Blunt just standing there saying “listen,” what if she could communicate with every single person the same way she did with people throughout the movie, where she appears to each one as someone they needed to hear from. That actually justifies the live broadcast because she’d need to reach everyone in realtime. And it’s a way more effective way to create empathy at scale, which is supposedly the whole point.
It also would have given her abilities an actual reason to exist. As is, the movie never pays off why she can do the things she does. Give her that final moment and suddenly all of it means something.
Anyone else feel like the ending undersold what the rest of the movie set up? Or am I alone on this
