Last work trip before I quit. KLM business to hit Gold, or try Cathay?

So I'm leaving my job and have one last business trip coming up, Europe to Kuala Lumpur, business class paid by the company.

I'm currently Flying Blue Silver. If I fly KLM via AMS I'll hit Gold (with a total of 36k miles) for sure. The other option is Cathay via Hong Kong. I've already flown business on Singapore, Thai and Swiss, so it's not like I'm new to this. Cathay is always ranked among the best business classes out there and I wonder if it really lives up to that.

The catch: after this I'll be flying maybe one long haul a year, privately. Next year I want to do a bigger trip with my girlfriend (US or Asia, not decided yet), most likely in economy. With Gold I could bring her into the lounges, but we'd have to stick to SkyTeam for that trip. And realistically I won't keep Gold after that. So it basically comes down to: ticking Cathay off the list vs. roughly one year of Gold that mostly pays off on one trip for the two of us.

What would you do? And for those who've flown both, how does CX business compare to KLM? Is it worth it over KLM World Business Class?
