Beware of Wine 11.9. It broke my Wine install.

i saw Wine-dev 11.9 was offered in the Pop Shop yesterday and installed it. I usually don't have a problem with wine-dev but 11.9 deleted several runners, files and winecfg. Wine and winecfg could not be found via the terminal.

I temporarily changed my simlink to my games folder and installed/reinstalled wine 11 stable. i reset my simlink and my games work fine.

The version I use is the WineHQ one. There is mention of the problem in the forums.https://forum.winehq.org/

I am planning to upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04 and Cosmic soon. I have some concerns at the moment I hope someone can address.

  1. Will the upgrade clean out old kernels and leftover fragments in "/usr/lib/modules" and "/boot" or will I have to use Synaptic to clean them manually?

The reason I ask is i tried autoremove and purge but had to remove old items with Synaptic Package Manager due to messages like this:"rmdir: failed to remove '/lib/modules/6.2.0-76060200-generic': Directory not empty".

After removing with Synaptic: "Couldn't find any package by glob 'linux-image-6.2.0-76060200-generic'" and the only leftovers were folders with "system76_acpi.ko".

  1. Once I have used synaptic can I safely remove the folders with "system76_acpi.ko"?

  2. My boot/efi partition is 74% full. Will that cause problems for the upgrade? and will removing old kernel redidue clean that up?

  3. How are Wine/Lutris/Steam games effected by the upgrade? (see #5)

My games folders on my secondary drive are quite large. My wine and steam installs are on my ssd but link to the secondary.

After my install of Wine I moved the folder to my secondary drive and created a simlink. As a precaution when upgrading and (possibly) reinstalling Wine should I remove the simlink? i would hate to lose 300+ GB of games.

  1. I recall a comment by u/mmtask that .deb files with equivalents in the cosmic store will not be deleted just upgraded but can't seem to find it. Just a clarification: I got the wine development version from winehq because it was a later version. Will that get deleted when upgrading?
