I almost died!

In the early hours of Aug 11th, I woke up extremely short of breath. I stood up to see if that would improve my breathing and ended up passing out back on the bed. Thank goodness I fell back onto the bed, because that woke up my husband. He woke me up and asked if I was ok and I told him to call 911. I could not breathe and I had a horrible pain in my stomach.

I was taken to the ER by ambulance and I was a mess. My body was shutting down. My BP was in the 60’s, I was hypoxic, my labs were terrible. They were telling my family that I was extremely acidotic. Since the pain was in my stomach, they did a CT scan but didn’t find anything. A chest Xray showed enlarged heart, so they did an echocardiogram and found a lot of fluid around my heart. I was experiencing Cardiac Tamponade.

I had emergency surgery to open up my pericardium, drain the fluid and also place a catheter to continue draining anything else that collects. I had the drain in place for 8 days. Today they finally took it out and I’m hoping to go home tomorrow.

It was the scariest thing in my life.

The doctor said it was caused by my modified Ravitch. Since my anatomy was already messy due to the failed repair 30years ago, my sternum and heart were practically adhered together. There was a cardiac surgeon present in my original surgery to ensure the separation of my heart and sternum went smoothly; however, there was slight trauma and blood clots formed in my pericardium. My body was trying to break down the clots, causing inflammation and increased fluid collection. Even though my surgery was 6 weeks prior, I almost died from complications.

Just a warning to take care of yourself and remember that just because you’re almost at the 6 week mark, you can still have complications and you need to listen to your body.

Postop Restlessness

Hi! 41F 5 weeks PostOp here and I have the worst thoracic spine restlessness at night. It is preventing me from getting any rest, and I end up sleeping until noon because I can’t fall asleep until 4-6am. It has been awful. I talked to my surgeon and she did prescribe nerve medication but so far they have made me so dizzy that I end up nauseated and still unable to sleep.

Has anyone experienced this after surgery? Anything you have done that helped? How long did it last? Or is this going to be for the rest of my life?

Things I’ve tried:
- Heat
- Massage
- Walking more during the day
- Standing to watch TV at night
- Stretching (as much as I can without messing up bar placement)
- Biofreeze
- Magnesium
- Melatonin
- Iron (although, just started 2 days ago, not sure if it’s working yet)

13 days PostOp

Hello again!
I am 13 days post op and my surgery was a bit more complicated than a standard Nuss or Modified Ravitch. I had a failed Nuss procedure 34 years. I was just too young to follow the strict activity restrictions and the surgery ended up failing. Due to that previous repair, my surgeon had to just go in and see what she could do correct the pectus since my sternum was compressing my heart, and my lungs were affected as well. She ended up pulling up the sternum and reshaping my chest wall. She placed a Nuss bar diagonally to keep things in place.

I am still in quite a bit of pain at this time. I thought maybe it would start improving, but when I try to take less narcotics, I end up in excruciating pain. I also have a ton of pressure and feel like it’s almost harder to breathe than before the surgery. Since my situation is a bit unique I know it’s hard to compare, but how long does the intense pain and pressure last after surgery? I also can’t really get past 1250mL on my spirometer and the surgical team wanted me at 1500mL prior to discharge. I worried I will still have shortness of breath even after surgery, but hoping it will improve as I recover. I also have a ton of popping when I deep breathe, does that eventually stop as well?? I have my first postop follow up with my surgeon on Friday so I will definitely ask her all my concerns. But for now I was hoping this community can share some experience with their post op journey.

Any postop tips welcomed! I would love to be able to do more with less pain.

Ravitch Procedure

Hello! I am scheduled for a Ravitch procedure July 1st at UCLA. I had a failed Nuss procedure 34years ago so unfortunately, this will be a complicated surgery due to probable scar tissue. I was hoping anyone who’s been through this surgery can give me some insights on what to expect after, anything I might need in the hospital or at home after? Best things to improve recovery? Basically any tips you have, send them on over because I am quite nervous to undergo this procedure at my age (41 😩) but I absolutely need to it relieve pressure on my heart and lungs. Thanks in advance!
