does anyone give maiden names to their wives?

exactly as the title explains, i’m wondering if anyone has given maiden names to their wives and if so, what they do with that information? the way my spreadsheet is set up is very similar to morbid’s in that the wives in the “Sims Info” section are given the husband’s surname automatically. i could change this, but then i’m afraid it would mess up the pattern of every sim having the same surname.

i used to have maiden names picked out beforehand all the way back in 2nd generation. there were 3 women with maiden names (not counting my matriarch because she also never got one) but then i eventually just stopped when it came time to marry off the third generation. aside from those 3, i only have one other example of a wife having a maiden name in 7th gen, where she marries the future governor of salem and her brother (who carries her maiden name) runs off and has an illegal gay romantic relationship with the original governor’s son. not important but i just like the storylines for them.

back to my point, i like the idea of having maiden names, but i have no idea what i would even do with them/how i would log them. my sims tree could include their maiden names but then every wife’s name would be too long to fit on the screen and it would be like it’s not even there

then again. it’s really not that deep and i could easily just not log it and not have maiden names

generation 6 finished! (1550-1657)

i've finished generation 6 and i'm just about to start generation 7 off with our first marriage (Philadelphia Newman)! here are each of my families up until this point (in parentheses are the generation they are apart of)! they are in order of relation to my generation 6 heir, Jonathan (and coincidentally, also geographic location):

Newman family to Lawrence Archer are Jonathan's first cousins (Gideon's siblings' families).

Bishop family to Hubbard family are Jonathan's second cousins.

Decker and Winter families are Jonathan's third cousins.

Sabine and Isaac to Chesterbrite-Chastain are Jonathan's fourth (?) cousins.

at this point in the challenge, i have 69 sims currently alive and 196 sims in total throughout the 107 in-game sims years. almost each and every one of my generation 6 sims have a unique storyline planned out for them.

i've had so much fun with this save and i cant wait to see where generation 7 will take me! i really really wanna know what you think of my sims as well! i wanna hear if anyone has favorites or anything idk (i definitely do)

if anyone has questions about my sims feel free to ask! im not the most organized with cc but i will try my best if anyone has questions with that as well 🫶

edit: i just realized a lot of my portraits aren’t cropped correctly and that’s really bugging me, sorry if that’s an issue 😭😭 it’s my first time actually doing family photos like that

edit 2: not even an hour later we already lost jane lmao 😭 philippe too but jane was more important she was literally my heir’s mother

does anyone else have this problem? (gen 5+)

i’m just starting generation 7 births, and after planning a lot of it out (for like maybe two hours) i am stuck with an insanely crowded timeline sheet and some years i can barely even fit births in so ill have like 10 days of just back to back births. even in doing this it will still take me 20 in-game years to get only HALF my sims’ pregnancies over with, not counting sims that are still children and i dont have their future marriages logged. i am scared that these future marriages will not have space to have children because of the vast amount of children already in spots.

i’m worried that this will get to the point my sims will eventually grow old and die before their generation is over and they can start having kids. it has gotten so bad that i am purposely killing off random sims that aren’t heirs to their family and reducing the amount of births my sims have significantly. it’s getting out of hand really fast and when i look at morbid’s sheet it looks so much less hectic.

is anyone else currently having or had this problem? i really would like to fix this but i love my alive gen 6 sims so far and i don’t want to kill them off as im attached to most (although if i have to murder off a majority of their 7th generation children to keep things calmer for me, i will).

edit: right now i feel my best bet is to maybe double up on birthdays. i plan to do this for generation 8 as most of generation 7 has been mapped out. i really dont wanna put side households on unplayed because my game has been giving my kids 20 identical kids from a glitch, plus i’d like the idea of choosing the kids names myself and aging them up and such

edit 2: i’ve also decided on enacting a rule that each 20 sims years (starting 1700) i will flip a coin/roll a d4 for each sims family, if they roll a bad result, i will kill them off. this will not apply to the main family.

meet my 10-year-old witch sim!

i have just accidentally created even more lore for a sim i already really love (and had a planned storyline for)

Silence Baker was born in Salem in the year 1645 to Puritan herbalist/doctor Jeremiah Baker and his wife (my current heir's sister) Fear Baker. She was born just 17 minutes before her identical twin sister, Charity Baker. They were the third and fourth-born children of the Baker family respectively. Before the twins' birth, Jeremiah and Fear had two children, Providence (1640), who did not survive childbirth, and Hezekiah (1642) their older and only brother. After the twins, the Bakers would soon go on to have and lose two more children, Humility (1648) and Amos (1649), both dying within months from a birth defect.

Silence had always been a reserved child (much like her mother), unlike Charity who was more outgoing, like her father. Silence's childhood was very gloomy, however, and she believed herself and her family to be marked by death. However, when Silence was 10 (in 1655) was when tragedy really struck. It had been late at night, her identical twin sister asleep and her father and brother out at the tavern when Silence was awakened by a thud--shocked to find her mother's body on the ground.

Silence was trying not to panic as she looked for any kind of herb that could save her. But the real opportunity came from the Grim Reaper. Silence knew what she had to do--she had to do the unthinkable and face death itself. So she did, pleading and pleading for her mother's life back--at the expense of performing witchcraft. But nonetheless, it worked. Fear was back, and Silence had saved her.

This action will have consequences... (read more for my plans for her below)

>!I mainly plan for her to take over her father's business of herbalism, as (supposedly) the successful curing of illnesses by herbs was deemed as witchcraft at this time period. She will not marry either, making her susceptible to social stigma and judgement from townsfolk. When it comes time for the Salem Witch Trials, she is one of the few Sims I will veto and kill off no matter if she rolls safety.!<

100 year mark!! (1550-1650)

well, i've hit the 100 year mark! 400 days down, around 1,500 more to go! (and possibly 1000 more if i plan to backtrack and play through 1300-1550 after i'm done)

i really did NOT think i'd get this far (especially not in just 7 months!) and frankly i'm really surprised i did! i'd attempted the regular Decades Challenge twice in the past--my first attempt was without mods and cc, which lasted maybe 8(?) months and i only got up to 1920 before i just decided to stop playing and never got the motivation to restart. my second attempt was with mods and cc, took me around 6 months and i got to 1931 before i just stopped entirely because i wanted to start this udc save (honestly, i wonder how far i would have gotten had i never stopped, as now with the effort i have put into udc i realize i have essentially played 200 full years worth of the regular decades challenge). but truthfully, i attribute my ongoing motivation to the organization of the spreadsheet template given as i was NOT organized with my past two attempts

this challenge has genuinely given me such a profound and significant fascination with social history and has truly made me appreciate the charm that historicalness brings. i don't plan to stop anytime soon either, which has really been something i was scared of when i first started.

i hope you all enjoy the photos i have taken within the past few sims years as i dont tend to take gameplay screenshots often, hopefully i'll start to take more soon

meet my sim!

i rlly like this one side household sim i have so im gonna share a lil bit abt her!

Sabine Archer was born in 1629 in England to peasants Timothy and Penelope Archer. She is the second-oldest of five children and the oldest surviving child. She lost her older twin sister, Lillian, shortly after her birth. She would go on to lose two more siblings, Christabel and Valentine III. Her younger and only surviving sister, Rebecca, never got along. Rebecca was golden child, yet Sabine was the black sheep.

In 1648, she met a man by the name of Robert Cass. Robert charmed Sabine and made her feel special, which was a feeling she had longed for since her childhood. Eventually, this charming had led to seduction, and they had slept together, a one time occurrence. Just a few weeks later, she had begun feeling sick each morning, which alarmed her. Once she felt the first kick, she knew she was in trouble. But she couldn't tell anyone.

Within 7 months, she was noticeably pregnant. Her parents caught on and, furious with their daughter, kicked her out. She had gone back to Robert and pleaded with him to marry her, but he refused and told her not to return to him. So she fled. She fled far from her parents and Robert, and stopped at a nearby outdoor stable. It wasn't perfect, but it provided enough shelter to keep her safe from the snow.

By the time she was around 9 months into her pregnancy, she had found a small, nearby cottage that was seemingly abandoned. Sabine took the property for herself and gave birth to her child in there, a baby boy whom she had named Isaac in January of 1649.

i hope u guys like her and her storyline! i rlly liked doing this little storyline and i think i might do it more with other sims sometime soon! im rlly excited to see where her and isaac's stories take me

i’m running out of space in my world

i never imagined i’d have this problem, but i’m rapidly running out of lots in my world. i for some reason have had the most insane luck with rolls (i have like one death every 3 years.) and my sims are having upwards of 5 or more children and (especially with colonial america/brindleton bay) the amount of children outnumber the amount of lots ready.

right now, i think i have 13 (generation 6) children in colonial america that are currently alive (the oldest is just about to become a teenager) and its planned to potentially double. i have 3 lots which are used as community lots (a church, a graveyard, and a prison/courthouse). i have 2 more marriages to get through as well, which ultimately leaves me with 2 lots for all my generation 6 children.

right now, it’s looking like i will need 8 lots for all my side household children at the moment and some of my sims have many more children to get through. i do not want to kill my sims without reason for “population control” but i’m afraid i’m running into a wall here. i had the idea of placing these sims not in the world and then reserving one lot for all the sims not in the world to move them into and age them up, have them try for a baby, etc. but i’m not sure because i would like to see all my sims in the world.

90 year mark! (1550-1640)

https://app.thesimstree.com/public/tree/sIl6HHA0XzwqKiQiKwNGBVes76fDjLTT?ref=a747ecba

i’m really proud of myself for getting to nearly 100 years in around 6 months, and i wanted to share my progress! i honestly could have waited another 10 sim years to share this but i’m honestly really happy with how things are going so i’m sending it now

there are some things i do a little differently:

• i don’t use the gallery or journal, i only post the basic sim info
• i choose random years within the age range as death years (to avoid all my sims dying at the same ages)
• i don’t bother giving surviving newborns any pictures, they’ll be infants in like a day anyways
• i don’t update pictures for elders, the sims continue to stay adults

i hope you guys like my sims!! the yellow line follows the heir

what to do for pregnancies out of wedlock?

(ignore the flair)

so i have a side-household sim who only had female children but i would like to keep his surname, as he is the only remaining sim (outside of my main household) to have that starting surname and i would like to keep it circulating in england (my main household is in colonial america).

my main thought is, why not have one of his daughters have a son out of wedlock, have the son keep the surname, and obviously hope he lives to carry on the surname. so my question is, how would i mark down an out-of-wedlock baby? would i simply put down the father’s name and instead of putting down “Husband of _”, i would put down “Fling/Lover of _”? this sounds pretty self explanatory but i’m just curious to see how any of you handled this
