Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment devised by physicist Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. No real animal was harmed.

Imagine a sealed steel box. Inside are a cat, a Geiger counter, a tiny amount of radioactive material, a flask of poison, and a hammer. If a single atom decays, the counter detects it, the hammer smashes the flask, and the cat dies. If the atom does not decay, the cat lives.

Schrödinger waited an hour. According to quantum mechanics, while the box is closed, the atom exists in two states simultaneously: decayed and not decayed. Therefore, the cat is both alive and dead. This is called superposition.

The paradox is that everyday life does not work this way. A cat cannot be both alive and dead. Yet quantum mechanics claims otherwise — until an observer looks, a particle exists in all possible states at once. Only when the box is opened does the superposition collapse, and the cat becomes either alive or dead.

Schrödinger created this experiment to highlight the absurdity of that interpretation. He meant to say: "Look where your theory leads — a cat both alive and dead, this is madness." Over time, however, Schrödinger's cat became the most famous metaphor in quantum physics.

Today the phrase is used for any uncertain situation where the outcome is unknown until you check. A package that may or may not have arrived, a message you have not yet opened — all are jokingly called Schrödinger's cat.
