Would this be suitable for a terrarium? First timer.

Would this be suitable for a terrarium? First timer.

I bought this small greenhouse from IKEA, originally planning to put some potted houseplants in it. But now I’m thinking it might be nice to build a simple terrarium instead. Would it be suitable for that?

I would at least have to seal the seams at the bottom, maybe even all of them. A background wall for climbing plants and moss would also be nice.

I have experience with houseplants and heavily planted aquariums, but not with terrariums yet.

It’s near a large southwest-facing window, so there might be enough light during summer, but I assume I’ll need some grow light strips in winter.

I have some Peperomia, Tradescantia, and Philodendron Brasil that I would like to put in there. I’m also thinking about getting Fittonia and some other colorful plants and mosses.

Would I need a humidifier, or would the moisture from the moss and plants be enough? There’s a large aquarium store near me that also has a terrarium section, so getting supplies won’t be a problem.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this plan. Should I go for it, or just stick to potted plants?

Hi all,

First of all, I want you to know that I really appreciate your enthusiasm and passion. Like a lot of other plant and hobby subreddits, your experience and knowledge are greatly appreciated. Even if no one likes or reacts, know that there are a lot of lurkers like me who learn a lot from your efforts.

Now to the point. I have some experience with houseplants, mostly quite successful, sometimes disappointing. But overall, I love it and my thumb is getting greener.

Recently, I ordered some plants online. All but my tiny begonia rex ‘hugh mclauchlan’ arrived in very good condition. This one, however, had all of its leaves wilting and the soil was very wet.

I’ve had great success with my dieffenbachia, spathiphyllum and monstera adansonii in semi hydroponic setups, so I impulsively decided to put my begonia in semi hydro as well.

There are no leaves left, but the roots and the “core” of the plant look healthy to me. Will this plant recover, or have I made a mistake?

All help is welcome, and stay awesome. Thanks!
