Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 17

Good evening,

On June 27, 2026, two Saturdays ago, police received a call around 2 PM which sent them to the 3500 block of Arcadia St. in Ingleside. There, they found a woman in a vehicle suffering from a serious gunshot wound. Emergency services pronounced her dead on the scene. Police identified her as Teona A. Purnell, 19 years old.

The blue dot for this incident is the eastern of the two southern-most dark blue dots. Does that make sense?

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/woman-killed-in-shooting-on-arcadia-street-norfolk-police-say/

https://www.norfolk.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/10336

A few observations:

- Firstly, I must apologize for this entry being so late. I meant to give it another day to match it up with the time between the previous two murders and then forgot for a whole week. The murder this past weekend spurred me to catch up. The only silver lining is that I can say much more confidently that this was the last murder in June, to our knowledge.

- Ms. Purnell's death was the 17th this year and the fifth in June.

- The average age of those killed in June was 35.4 years old. The average age in 2026 has been 37.06 years old.

- Of the 17 people killed in Norfolk in 2026, Ms. Purnell was the fourth woman. The other 13 people have been identified by police and media as men. This is roughly equivalent to the ratio in most years.

- This project is meant to give us clearer data on serious crime in Norfolk; it is not meant to scare us all into leaving town or indulging in chaotic terror.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 16

Good evening,

This past Friday evening, about 7:40pm of 26 June 2026, a call for a shooting summoned police to the 600-block of Church St. This is just south of the intersection of Church St. and Brambleton Ave. There, police found 20-year-old Tale A. Fuller shot multiple times. Authorities pronounced Mr. Fuller dead on the scene.

The dark blue dot for this incident is the furthest west of the four dark blue dots.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/npd-man-shot-multiple-times-on-church-st/

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/06/29/20-year-old-dies-church-street-shooting-norfolk/

A few observations:

- This was the fourth murder in June and the 16th overall in 2026 in Norfolk.

- The average age of those killed so far in June is 39.5 years of age. The average age overall for 2026 has been 38.26 years old.

- Out of the 16 murders in 2026, 13 have been identified by authorities and local media as men. The remaining three have been women. This is a slightly higher ratio of men than usual for the past few years, but not by much.

- I have noted that there was a murder on Arcadia St. on Saturday, I will post that tomorrow to keep the pacing of events closer to reality.

- This project is meant to give us clear and accurate (or as accurate as possible) data on murder in Norfolk. It is not meant to horrify, demoralize, or lower property values.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 15

Good evening,

Last night, around 10 PM on 25 June 2026, a call summoned police to the intersection of Little John Dr. and McNutt Ct. There, evidence and local neighbors directed police to two men who had been shot. Both were found by police to have life-threatening injuries and EMS transported them to the hospital. One of those men, Jacorey Page, 23 years old, died at the hospital. The other remains in critical condition.

WAVY gathered some rumor / scuttlebutt from folks who live in the area and the Commonwealth's Attorney had no details to share due to their investigation.

The blue dot for this incident is the western and northern-most of the three dark blue June dots.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/npd-2-shot-near-intersection-of-little-john-dr-and-mcnutt-ct/

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/06/26/shooting-little-john-one-dead/

A few observations:

- This was the third murder in June in Norfolk in 2026 and the fifteenth overall.

- The average age of those killed in June has been 46 years old. The average age for the year is currently at 39.57 years old.

- Mr. Page's death means that 12 of the 15 of those killed by others in 2026 have been identified as male, with the remaining 3 being identified by police and local media as women. This is broadly in line with recent trends, although slightly skewing more heavily than usual against men.

- As I generally try to emphasize, this project exists not to scare people or push a narrative of chaos and fear, but to give us hard data to create impressions and opinions on the most serious crime in Norfolk.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 14

Good afternoon,

This past Tuesday afternoon, 16 June 2026, around 2:30 PM, a call summoned police to the Rally's at the corner of Azalea Garden Rd. and Sewell's Point Rd. There, they found 38-year-old Alfred C. McKenzie. EMS took Mr. McKenzie to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Police arrested a suspect on the scene.

The blue dot for this incident is the western of the two dark blue dots currently on the map, besides the key.

https://www.wavy.com/news/man-injured-in-shooting-on-south-cape-henry-avenue/

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/06/17/man-arrested-norfolk-homicide-azalea-garden-road/

A few observations:

- This was the second murder in Norfolk in June and the 14th overall for the city in 2026.

- Mr. McKenzie's death brings the average age of those deceased in June to 57.5, with the average age of those killed in 2026 overall being 40.8.

- Eleven of the fourteen people murdered in 2026 so far have been men, with the remaining three identified by police and local media as women.

- I misidentified the location of the previous murder in June as being at the Wal-Mart at Little Creek and Tidewater Dr., a.k.a. Southern Shopping Center. This was incorrect. The location was at the Military Circle Wal-Mart. I changed the map to reflect the correct location. Thanks to user Reasonable_Abroad778 for pointing that out.

- This project exists not to scare people but to educate us all with the data available regarding the most serious crime in Norfolk.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 13

Good afternoon,

Police responded to a call this past Sunday, 07 June 2026, at around 4 PM to the Walmart at Southern Shopping Center. There, they found 77-year-old Bert D. Atienza. Police believed Mr. Atienza was in an altercation inside the Walmart that was then followed-up outside the Walmart. Mr. Atienza was taken to the hospital, but died yesterday, 08 June 2026.

Three people have been charged with his assault. As of now, news media does not report any homicide charges but these actions led to Mr. Atienza's death, so I assume charges will be upgraded when these folks stand in front of a judge.

The dark blue dot 1/3 of the way from the top of the map represents this incident.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/77-year-old-dies-after-assault-at-norfolk-walmart/

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/06/09/man-dies-assault-walmart/

A few observations:

- This was the first murder in June and the 13th overall for Norfolk in 2026. May closes as the worst of the year so far with five murders. Each of the last three years, which is how long I have been tracking this data, have had at least one month with at least five murders so this is not good but also with precedent.

- Since this is the first murder in June, the average age is set at 77 years old. The average age for 2026 so far is about 41.1.

- Ten of the thirteen people killed this year have been identified by media and law enforcement as men, with the other three being women. This is roughly similar to trends in previous years.

- I continue this project not to portray Norfolk as a bloodbath; quite the opposite, hard data allows us to better understand this capital crime in our city.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 12

Good evening,

Last Thursday evening, 28 May 2026, around 11:20 PM, a call summoned police and EMS to the 800-block of Goff St. EMS transported Greta Denise Huggins, 60 years old, to the hospital. She died of her injuries at the hospital. Two other people were injured with little information on those individuals.

Investigators at the scene have since charged three men. Local news interviews and the charges for the three men point to two groups of next-door neighbors in an apartment complex shooting at each other and striking Ms. Huggins fatally.

The dot for this incident is in Huntersville, the second-most-southern blue dot on the map.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/large-police-presence-on-goff-street-in-norfolk/?ipid=promo-link-block1

https://norfolk.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/10287

A few observations:

- Ms. Huggins' death was the fifth murder in May and the 12th overall for Norfolk in 2026.

- This murder sets the average age of those killed in May to 38.8. The average age of the violently deceased in 2026 has been 37.8, with one murder in March still unidentified and therefore not factored into the average.

- Three of the twelve killed in 2026 have been identified by police and media as women, with the other nine being men. This 25/75 ratio is roughly along the lines of 2023 and 2024, while 2025 was closer to but not at a 50/50.

- This project is meant to inform and educate with hard data on crime in Norfolk; it is not meant to lower property values or destabilize the school system or anything like that.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 11

Good evening,

This past Saturday, 23 MAY 2026, a series of events led to a murder. At about 8:15 AM, a call summoned police to Blackwood Ave. Police found that a dispute between a stepfather and stepson led to the stepson firing a weapon at their house, resulting in the stepfather being wounded to a non-life-threatening extent.

About 20 minutes later, at 8:38 AM, a different call brought police to the corner of Azalea Garden Rd. and Robin Hood Rd., particularly to Fat Philly's restaurant and convenience store. Police and EMS found that the stepson had left Blackwood Ave. and then shot and killed a cashier at Fat Philly's, 47-year-old Meghann Patel, and then fled the scene. EMS pronounced her dead at the scene.

A final call for an unattended, running vehicle brought police to the 2400-block of Alameda Ave. Police found the stepson dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The light blue dot for this incident is in the middle of the eastern third of the map.

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/05/23/woman-dies-shooting-azalea-garden/

https://norfolk.gov/m/newsflash/home/detail/10278

A few observations:

- Ms. Patel's death was the fourth murder in Norfolk in May and the eleventh overall for 2026.

- Her death takes the average age for those killed in May to 33.5. For the year, the average age is 35.6 years of age.

- Of the eleven murders so far in 2026, two have been women; the other nine have been identified by police and local news as men.

- I have been working on this project in order to educate folks on the hard data of a particular type of serious crime in our city; the project is not meant to scare people off or put morale in the crapper.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 10

Good afternoon,

On Friday afternoon, 22 May 2026, at around 1 PM a call summoned police to the Shell gas station at 7500 Tidewater Dr. There, police and EMS found two men wounded by gunfire. After an investigation of that scene and another call, police believe that the two men were injured in a shooting at the 7800-block of Dallas St. This is in the neighborhood to the west of the shopping center with this Shell station.

One of the men was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died at the hospital. This was 18-year-old Brandon W. Carter, Jr.

The light blue dot for this incident is the northernmost on the map, nearly center and 2/3 up.

https://www.13newsnow.com/article/news/crime/norfolk-police-investigate-shooting-on-tidewater-drive/291-c065cba2-1665-49c0-84cf-e32388de5255

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/gunshot-victim-reported-in-norfolk-units-on-scene/

A few observations:

- This was the 3rd murder in May and the 10th overall in 2026.

- Mr. Carter's death moves the average age of those killed in May to 29 years old. For the year, the average age of murder/homicide victims is 34.33.

- As of this incident, nine of the ten murders in Norfolk for 2026 involved men being killed, versus one woman. This will change with the next write-up, but that was the case as of this occasion.

- I said I would post the "three additional murders" in the coming days, but I believe I miscounted by combining Dallas St. and Tidewater Dr. headlines for the same incident. There is one more murder from this weekend to post.

- Per usual: this project is meant to inform rather than terrify.

Tracking 2026 Murders in Norfolk, Part 9

Good evening,

This past Thursday evening, 21 MAY 2026, around 5 PM, a call summoned police to 1157 N. Military Hwy, which is a Holiday Inn Express. There, police and EMS found two men suffering from stab wounds, a customer and an employee of the hotel. One of those were serious enough to warrant evacuation. That man, Luis / Lewis Diaz (articles spell it both ways), 48 years old, died at the hospital. It is not clear whether Mr. Diaz was the customer or employee.

The light blue dot for this incident is in the western quarter of the map.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/npd-2-stabbed-on-n-military-hwy/

https://www.wtkr.com/news/in-the-community/norfolk/two-people-hospitalized-in-stabbing-on-n-military-highway

A few observations:

- This was the second murder in Norfolk in May and ninth overall in 2026.

- The average age of those killed in May is 34.5, while the average age for 2026 so far is 36.375.

- To this point, eight of the nine murders in Norfolk have been identified by authorities and media as men. The other was a woman. This roughly aligns with 2023 and 2024 proportions, though 2025 was closer to an even male/female ratio.

- I am aware that there have been three additional murders in the last two days. I will attempt to post one of those a day until I am caught up. I want to pace myself so that they each get their proper recognition and so that I do not get behind the rest of my "life" stuff.

- As always, I disclaim: this project is not meant as a scare tactic or strategy. I began tracking a analyzing data on this in 2023 so that we had durable and meaningful info on murder in our city.

Good evening,

This past Friday night, 01 MAY 2026, around 9 PM, a report brought police officers to the 300-block of E. Freemason Ave. This is Downtown, near the intersection of St. Paul's and E. Freemason. There, police found 21-year-old Davion M. Cooke. Mr. Cooke was transported to the hospital but medical personnel pronounced him dead there. A suspect has been arrested and charged with 2nd-degree murder, robbery, and firearms charges.

The light blue dot for this incident is towards the Southwest corner of the city.

https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/npd-man-shot-killed-on-east-freemason-st/

https://www.pilotonline.com/2026/05/02/man-dies-downtown-norfolk-shooting/

A few observations:

- Mr. Cooke's death was the first murder in May and the eighth overall so far in 2026 in Norfolk.

- The current average age for those killed in May starts at 21. For the year, the average age is now 34.71, with one murder in March still unidentified.

- So far in 2026, seven of the eight of the people killed have been identified by authorities as men, with one woman. This is roughly in line with most yearly trends, although 2025 was somewhat closer to balanced between the sex/genders.

- This murder tracking project is not meant to scare people and bottom out property prices; instead, it is meant to inform people and track data that news media does not offer to track.
