Alright I’ve been going in circles on this and need some real opinions from people who’ve ridden these.

What I’m chasing is pretty simple — I want that aggressive dirt bike feel and as close to a 2 stroke sound/character as possible, but still street legal.

Right now I’m stuck between a few routes:

Option 1: just say f it and grab a CRF300L and build it out (big bore, exhaust, weight reduction, etc)

Option 2: spend more and go KTM 500 EXC-F — but honestly I’m not in love with how it looks which is holding me back

Option 3: Husqvarna FE 501S — feels like the best middle ground right now

Option 4: GASGAS ES 500 — I like it but I keep hearing it’s a bit softer / less aggressive than the others

For context, I’m not looking for a commuter. I want something that still feels like a real dirt bike, just happens to be plated.

Main things I care about:

  • throttle response / power feel
  • weight / how “dirt bike” it feels
  • sound (as close to 2 stroke vibe as possible)
  • not feeling too watered down for street legality

If you’ve ridden any of these back to back, what actually feels the closest to a real dirt bike?

And is building a 300L just a waste of time if this is what I’m after?
