Tips on painting translucent paper mache?

hey all, I'm trying to make a leaf-like paper mache object (the korok mask from botw). I know it isn't exactly traditional paper mache, since I used full sheets of paper instead of ripping and layering them, but I wanted it to be translucent (see pic 2 for what it looks like against the sun) so it's a little flimsier than it could be.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has tips on how to paint it and have it remain translucent? I was thinking maybe watercolor it green, but then use modge podge on top to seal it? But I read that modge podge shouldn't be used on top of watercolor, cuz it's water soluble.

edit: I used newsprint paper, and some Elmer's kids glue and a little bit of flour.

TIA!
