"How do I handle interviews when I have the technical knowledge but not the professional hands-on experience?"

I’ve been working as a Research Analyst for ~2 years, but the role has been relatively non-technical — mostly PPT/reporting, writing insights, and some Excel. I haven’t had much hands-on experience using SQL, Python, or Power BI in my actual job. I’m now trying to transition into Data Analytics, so I’ve learned SQL, intermediate Python, Power BI, DAX, etc. I’ve also reworked my resume around Data Analyst roles, and thankfully I’m getting a decent number of recruiter callbacks. The problem is the interviews. I’ve had 3 interviews where I was shortlisted for roles requiring around 2 YOE, but I couldn’t clear them because the interviewers quickly identified the gap between my knowledge of the tools and real-world experience using them. For example, I can understand/write SQL and explain Power BI concepts, but when asked questions like how I used indexes, query folding, report optimization, etc. in a real project, the lack of hands-on professional experience becomes obvious. For people who have successfully transitioned into Data Analytics from a non-technical role: how did you bridge this experience gap? Would really appreciate practical advice on projects, interview preparation, positioning, or anything else that helped you make the transition.

Resigned without any offer need your guidance !

I resigned without having another offer.

I have 2 years of experience in a role that was mostly repetitive PPT and Excel work with almost no learning. I automated around 60–70% of my work using Codex and other AI tools, but the role itself wasn't helping me grow.

I stayed because my family had financial debt. Now all the loans are cleared, and I've saved enough to survive for around 6 months without a job.

I've decided to take the risk and prepare for actual data analyst roles focused on Python, SQL, Power BI, Azure, and eventually machine learning. I know the market is tough, but staying in that job felt more damaging to my career than resigning.

Current level: Intermediate in SQL and Python. I plan to brush up on Azure and Power BI and build 2 strong projects.

What would you recommend I focus on to maximize my chances of landing a data analyst role?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

live coding interview (YipitData) for a Data Operations Analyst role!

I have my first technical interview via in a tomorrow.

It's a 45-min live screen-share coding session.

They actually gave me the focus areas in advance:

  1. **Communication skills**

  2. **Dealing with an "outage period"** (handling a week where missing viewership data was hardcoded as 0).

  3. **Relationships & Joins** (mapping key viewership columns to IMDb ratings).

Has anyone done a interview before? Any tips on how to balance explaining my logic while typing without panicking?

Thanks!
