Anyone else prefer staying outside the busiest ski areas?

Did a ski trip in Austria last winter and realized I actually enjoyed staying slightly away from the busiest areas way more than expected.

The slopes were still easy to reach, but evenings were quieter and less hectic after skiing all day. A couple of friends thought it was too calm, but honestly, I slept better and enjoyed the trip more because of it.

Made me curious how other people choose where to stay on ski trips. Do you stay close to nightlife/après-ski or somewhere quieter?

Stayed in Arlberg last winter and found a surprisingly quiet hotel

I’ve been to a few ski areas in Austria over the years, and one thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of hotels near the major ski lifts can feel super busy and crowded after a full day on the slopes.

Last winter in Arlberg, I ended up staying at Mondschein Hotel & Chalet instead of one of the larger resort hotels near St. Anton. Honestly wasn’t expecting much beyond a decent location, but the quieter atmosphere ended up being my favorite part of the trip.

The hotel had more of a cozy chalet feel rather than the typical big ski resort vibe. After skiing all day, it was actually nice coming back somewhere calm instead of another loud après-ski scene.

A few things I liked:

  • Easy access to skiing without dealing with huge crowds constantly
  • Relaxed atmosphere in the evenings
  • Great mountain views from the room
  • Staff recommendations for smaller local spots nearby were surprisingly good

The only thing is, if you’re mainly going for nightlife and nonstop partying, staying closer to the bigger St. Anton hotels is probably a better fit.

Curious where other people stayed in Arlberg and whether you’d pick a quieter hotel again or stay closer to the busy areas?
