Equipment question?

What to do? Should I derank all the red equipment and choose the S- gear equipment, then start upgrading from there? I keep hearing that the S-gear is what I should be using? Please help... thanks

Would S equipment be considered better/more powerful than the red equipment... for some reason I keep merging and getting red equipment instead of upgrading the S.... i see that some players have red S equipment... do I get S equipment before red or would my red upgrade to S? Help?
