Lady Whistleblown Brethren Dispatch Issue No.10 Pet Ban:When Love Becomes A Loyalty test in the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church

The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church pet controversy has now exploded across the world, with headlines in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada and beyond.

After reports emerged that a child connected to the Hales family was bitten by a dog, new ministry regarding pets was reportedly read out across the PBCC internationally. Families have been left devastated, terrified and confused as dogs, cats, birds and other pets suddenly became the focus of urgent ministry.

But this is not new.

Former members still remember the horror of the original anti-pet ministry from the 1960s, when beloved family animals were removed in heartbreaking and often deeply inhumane ways in the name of obedience.

And yet, in recent years after COVID, pets had quietly started appearing again in some Brethren homes. Some former members even claim local priests were allowing pets if it helped persuade families to stay inside the church as more people quietly began leaving.

So what changed?

This episode of Lady Whistleblown’s Brethren Dispatch looks at the contradictions, the hypocrisy, the loyalty tests, and the deeper emotional control behind the latest ministry.

Why is there emergency global ministry over pets, yet no worldwide emergency readings over child abuse, drink driving, or protecting victims?

Why does the Rapid Relief Team publicly promote Cookie the kookaburra as a comforting mascot with stuffed toys and emotional symbolism, while inside the church members are reportedly told that pets are spiritually dangerous and take affection away from “God”?

And what did Revelation actually mean when it spoke about “dogs” outside the gates?

The deeper you look into this story, the stranger it becomes.

Plymouth Brethren Christian Church 1991 photo collection "Women for sale!"

This is a memory and photo from an ex member-

"Memories! How embarrassing? I was not from this locality, but found this from 1991 collection, people I knew so well. This photo came with a position/place/row details of name and age, for any "lookers" on the hunt for a wife. I do have the names and ages, but I don't want to upset any fellows. 2 of the younger ones deceased, 1 abusive, and at least 2 from this photo fortunate to have escaped the cult. I was never in any 'for sale' photos."

And the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church says, “We don’t treat women as second-class citizens.” That’s the problem with cult environments: after generations inside the system, the control becomes normal to the people living in it. They stop seeing it for what it is because it’s all they’ve ever known. So to the PBCC, this isn’t “mistreating women.”

It’s just how women are treated.

Lawyer Ian Runkle reacts to 41% CSA in Plymouth Brethren Christian Church!

Edmonton lawyer reacts to the horrifying statistics uncovered in Dr. Jill Aebi-Mytton’s research into the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church including findings that 41% of former members surveyed reported experiencing (CSA). At what point does the law step in and demand change?

Make sure to check out his full video here starting around 2:13:00- https://www.youtube.com/live/1Y8bV\_z0Rq8?si=bsmf-LUVNa\_HyZ2X

To ex members, this is not a shocking statistic and if I am being honest, I wouldn't be shocked if this number was higher if we were able to get everyone to participate inside the cult and those that have left. Absolutely heart wrenching that we just let this happen! The phone calls and messages we get are the things that keep you up all night with nightmares....at some point, there has to be help come in.

Another Pet Letter read out in the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church!

A second letter has now been read out across the PBCC after the massive public backlash over the pet ban.

And at the same time, the church has actually added a whole new “Correcting the Record” section to its website.

Apparently the regular “News” section no longer had enough room for all the PR spin and damage control from the last few years of podcasts, tabloid headlines, documentaries, abuse allegations, lawsuits and public scandals.

And now the latest entry is about correcting the record on pets.

They claim they would never condone cruelty to animals and that if anyone was cruel to animals they would want “the appropriate authorities” involved.

Seriously????

This is the same ministry culture where generations of members heard phrases like “a good dog is a dead dog.” The same ministry they are STILL telling members to follow when they say “the standard represented by the great men and their ministry is carried forward and maintained.”

You cannot tell people to carry forward the ministry of the “great men” while pretending that ministry had nothing to do with the culture around animals inside the PBCC. Those two things do not go hand in hand.

And spare everyone the sudden concern about animal cruelty. Watch Episode 91 of the Get A Life podcast. Read the articles going back years. Former members have been speaking about these attitudes forever.

One minute pets are portrayed as filthy distractions that take affection away from God. The next minute the church PR machine is talking about “valuing every creature of God.”

Which is it?

Because you do not get to spend decades normalizing hostility toward pets and then suddenly act like the SPCA because the media backlash became too big to contain.

This entire “Correcting the Record” page reads like a panic response after international headlines exposed what was happening. Come to think of it, The whole correcting the record sounds like a boat load of lies after truth was revealed...AGAIN!

If the “Universal Elderhood” was trying to create a PR catastrophe, they couldn’t have done a better job. The sheer social incompetence behind this whole response is almost unbelievable. The “Universal Elderhood” might be one of the worst self-inflicted PR disasters I’ve seen in a long time.

Get A Life Ep.170 Lawyer Reacts to RRT v Bawtinheimer/ Bruce Hales Bans Get A Life "Opposing Series"

Well known Edmonton lawyer, Ian Runkle from the @RunkleOfTheBailey YouTube Channel looked over the claims of Brown Rudnick LLP's client, Rapid Relief Team and laughed! The Rapid Relief Team (RRT) is the charity arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church that recently took a copyright infringement case against this channel. Ian went through this case on his channel and gave some sage advice that all of us are thinking. This didn't just come from anyone! Runkle is also known for his highly successful YouTube and legal commentary channel, Runkle of the Bailey, where he explains Canadian legal issues to the public. Ian is a criminal defence and firearms law specialist who has become widely recognized for his legal analysis on YouTube and major Canadian legal issues. With Ian's permission, we created a shortened highlighted version of his hilarious thoughts on this. Make sure to check out his full video here starting around 2:13:00- https://www.youtube.com/live/1Y8bV\_z0Rq8?si=bsmf-LUVNa\_HyZ2X

We also give you a new extract of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church's written ministry from their Man Of God, Bruce Hales banning his members from watching rubbish of the opposers, like Get A Life Podcast. We aren't sure what they are smoking in there as this ministry clearly proves the intended censorship they were proving with all the DMCA takedown notices and lawsuit!

The Story Behind the Song "Let Me Breathe" by Dawson Ching

The Story Behind the Song "Let Me Breathe by Dawson Ching

I started writing this song in December 2023. At the time, I found myself going back into memories I hadn’t really allowed myself to fully sit with before, especially growing up in the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC), formerly known as the Exclusive Brethren. The same cult which the new Netflix series “Unchosen” is based on.

It wasn’t just about remembering what happened. It was about remembering how it felt.

The thing that stayed with me the most was that constant sense of suffocation. The control. The feeling of always being watched and judged. It creates this underlying tension in your body, like a tightness in your chest that never really goes away. You’re breathing, but it never feels like enough. You never feel fully free.

And the more I reflected on it, the more I realised that this feeling isn’t limited to one place.

You can experience that same suffocation in a toxic relationship.

In a family dynamic.

In any situation where control, fear, or manipulation take away your sense of self.

That feeling of walking on eggshells.

Of shrinking yourself to avoid conflict.

Of losing your voice without even realising it.

When I was writing, I kept coming back to that exact moment - the moment where all you want to do is take a deep breath, but you can’t. That sense of being trapped in an environment that you can’t escape from.

That’s also where the idea for the cover art came from. To me, it reflects what it felt like growing up like that, like being chained, locked in, controlled. And then, on the other side of that, the contrast of finally getting out. That moment where you realise you can breathe again, properly, for the first time.

But this song is not just about the feeling - it’s also about the reality of what caused it.

A big part of that is the leadership within the PBCC, specifically Bruce D. Hales. He presents himself as the “man of God,” but from my experience and the experiences of so many others, that position is used to control and manipulate people, including innocent children.

It’s something that has caused irreversible damage.

In my case and in most survivors' cases, it broke apart our families. It has taken away the chance for people to maintain normal relationships with family and friends, to continue to create memories with the people they love. Those are things you don’t get back, and that’s something I’ve had to come to terms with.

And while my experience comes from that specific environment, I know that the same kind of damage happens anywhere people are controlled, isolated, or made to feel powerless.

What makes it even harder is that it’s all presented as a “community.” But when you look at it critically, it aligns with most of the recognised criteria of a cult. That gap between how it looks from the outside and what it actually is on the inside is something I felt strongly about addressing in this song and speaking about publicly.

One of the most meaningful parts of this track for me is that I didn’t do it alone.

We used the sound of breathing from 12 other fellow survivors who also grew up in the PBCC cult and made the decision to leave. That was incredibly important to me, because for so long, all of our voices were suppressed.

This is a way of taking that back.

I want to say a huge thank you to Amos McEwen, Andrea MacKinnon, Anne Bennett, Ben Woodbury, Cheryl Bawtinheimer, Chester Cowley, Craig Hoyle, Heidi Allan, Jolie Cooper, Lavinia Richardson, Oliver Flintoff, and Pam Danylchuk for being part of this.

I’m genuinely so proud of every single one of you. I know how hard it is to walk away from something like that, or to stand up for yourself in any situation where you’ve been made to feel small. The fact that you chose yourselves, that you chose your freedom, is something you should never underestimate. You’ve all come so far, and you should be incredibly proud of that.

For me, this song is about turning something very painful into something very powerful, something that hopefully helps others.

Whether you’re leaving a controlling environment, questioning a relationship, or just starting to realise that something in your life doesn’t feel right.

I hope this gives you strength. I hope it gives you courage. And I hope it reminds you that you are allowed to choose yourself.

And that you deserve a life where you can breathe freely.

And for those who are still inside the PBCC, I hope this reaches you in some way. I hope it encourages you to question things and to look at the reality behind what you’re being told.

Because the truth is, Bruce D. Hales is not who he claims to be. The cult is not what it claims to be!

You deserve to make your own choices.

You deserve your own life.

And you deserve to breathe freely.

The song will finally be yours on May 22, and it’s the second single from my debut EP “Helluva Survivor,” which is coming out this summer.

This track is a very personal one for me, and putting it out feels like an important step in telling my story on my own terms. Please take great care of her!

I love you guys so much - take care.

Stop the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church from Killing more pets!

This little kitten was healthy, loved, and part of someone’s family.

Now she’s dead because a group of religious men decided pets might “take affection away from God.”

Since releasing information about the PBCC pet ban, I’ve received messages and phone calls from devastated people all over the world. Former members, current members, and families completely shattered over what is happening to animals inside this cult.

These are not dangerous animals. They are companion pets. Cats that helped people through anxiety. Dogs that gave lonely people comfort and routine. Animals that became part of the family.

And now people are being put under enormous pressure to get rid of them.

What kind of religion demands obedience over compassion? What kind of leadership thinks they have the right to interfere in the bond between people and their pets?

This video is not about attacking ordinary PBCC members. Many of them are heartbroken over this. This is about exposing the cruelty and control of leadership that believes it can dictate every part of a person’s life — right down to whether they are allowed to love an animal.

If you work in animal welfare, rescue, veterinary care, mental health, cult recovery, or the media, please pay attention to this story and help us get the word out.

The Rapid Relief Team and the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church picked the wrong person to try and silence.

This video is a direct update on the lawsuit filed against me after Get-a-Life Podcast exposed material they desperately wanted gone. Their lawyers demanded videos be removed. They expected fear, compliance, silence, and another former member pushed back into a corner. That didn’t happen.

Marc Randazza has now filed my defence, a counterclaim against RRT for misrepresentation, and an injunction application to force the immediate restoration of the deleted videos. Their censorship campaign now sits on the public record for everyone to see.

The truth is simple - this case was never really about copyright. It was about control.

The PBCC spent decades controlling every part of people’s lives. Speech. Friendships. Family. Information. Fear became normal inside that system. Now they are trying to drag that same culture of intimidation into the public square through expensive lawyers and legal threats. We are pushing back.

This fight matters far beyond me personally. Former members all over the world rely on Get-a-Life Podcast for support, recovery, information, and proof they are not alone. That is now becoming part of the legal case itself. Former members are preparing a public interest intervention so the court hears directly from people whose lives have been helped by this work. The stakes are enormous.

If powerful organisations can weaponise copyright law to erase criticism and survivor testimony, every independent creator speaking about abuse, coercion, religion, or cults becomes vulnerable. We need help to keep going.

Legal filings, injunction applications, responses, and court preparation cost huge amounts of money even with discounted legal support. Every donation helps keep this case alive. Every share helps spread the word. Every public voice makes it harder for them to bury this quietly.

If you believe survivors should have the right to speak openly about what happened to them —

If you believe wealthy organisations should not be allowed to edit public criticism through legal intimidation —

If you believe high-control groups should finally face scrutiny — Please support and share this fundraiser.

John S Hales- "The Best Dog is a Dead Dog"- Animal Abuse from the PBCC Man of God

Here is another quote from the published Ministry of John S Hales. John Hales was the previous PBCC great leader and is the father of the present PBCC leader Bruce D Hales.

If this doesn't make you run to your phone and report this latest letter on the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church banning pets- I don't know what will. NO COMMUNITY should be allowed to speak like this! They wonder why they have the issues they do! Take a culture taught this doctrine, add in alcohol, anti depressants, and a closed community and you get a narcissistic, misogynistic cult!

This is the transcript of the audio we received:

Four-year-old child attacked by a dog, belonging to a brother while at the brother's house for the evening meal, on Lord's Day, 12th April.

He sustained significant facial injuries requiring surgery. The ownership of such an animal, let alone it being kept at a brother's home, is clearly wrong. There are reports of some brethren having reverted to owning pets, including dogs and other animals, which practice has been clearly spoken against in ministry. The following references are examples, and there are many others in the ministry indexes which all brethren are encouraged to look up.

JT Jr., New Series, Volume 64, page 334

"Your house is a clean place, though, but then it becomes a holy place if you have an assembly in it. That's why you don't have any dogs around"

JHS, volume 66, page 145.

"Rats and mice out, cats too!"

"Well, they disposed of their dogs. And now what? Well, you acknowledge in the assembly that you were wrong to have such a creature hanging around."

JSH, new series, volume 127. Page 116.

Regarding pets:

"Thought they were finished with 30 years ago. Your house has got a pet in it. We couldn't have a supper there, that's all. See, the fellow raised it with Mr. Taylor about a pet, about a dog. Mr. Taylor says they're dogs. Unclean. Get them out. But what that brother didn't realize was it applied to cats. B.D.H. May even apply to birds, mightn’t it? Might even apply to birds, yes. These things have all been laid down in the statute. They're all on record."

Every household should be freshly exercised to ensure the standard represented in the great men and their ministries is carried forward and maintained.

Get A Life Ep.169 Breaking News! Cult Bans Pets: Plymouth Brethren Christian Church

Breaking news – Exclusive Brethren boss orders 50,000 members to dispose of their pets! An edict from the Brethren’s Sydney HQ was read out in all 300+ Plymouth Brethren Christian Church congregations globally on Saturday (May 2nd 2026), banning pet ownership by members. Cats, dogs, birds, rats and mice were all mentioned as being spiritually ‘unclean’ animals, and members were ordered to “uphold the words of the great leaders” who originally instigated the ‘pet ban’ in 1964.

The PBCC is the cult depicted so effectively in Netflix’s Unchosen drama – and the truth is just as strange and horrific as the movie.

History shows this will end very badly for thousands of cats, dogs, hamsters and guinea pigs globally. We expose harrowing stories of the mass slaughter of pets after the original 1964 edict, from both contemporary newspapers and from former members who witnessed their pets being killed – some by euthanasia, and some by cruel and amateurish brutality. We point out the dark hypocrisy of the PBCC’s PR podcasts that depict members as happy pet-owning animal lovers while secretly ordering a cull of cats and dogs.

Next time you see the cheerful red tents and uniformed “volunteers” of the PBCC’s Rapid Relief Team charity, with their slogan of ‘Care and Compassion’ – just remember what dirty secrets hide behind that lie.

"The church denied coordinating a campaign in support of the Coalition. Yeah - right?"

Nationally, the 2025 federal campaign was marked by controversy over members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church volunteering for Coalition campaigns. The ABC reported that there were unusually large numbers of volunteers supporting Coalition candidates at pre-poll booths in selected seats, and that leaked or circulated messages included instructions about how members should respond if asked about their religious affiliation. The church denied coordinating a campaign in support of the Coalition. Yeah - right?

The Centre for Public Integrity also reported concerns about the political activity of Plymouth Brethren members during the campaign, including questions about whether the church’s charitable status could be affected if organised party-political involvement were proven.

There is an important distinction here. Religious people have every right to take part in politics. Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists and everyone else are entitled to volunteer, donate, campaign, hand out material, join parties and argue for causes. That is democracy.

The concern is not religious participation.

The concern is opacity, coordination, and scale.

If a church, charity, corporate network, union network, business lobby, or other organised body becomes a de facto campaign arm for a party or candidate, voters are entitled to know what is happening. They are entitled to know who is really behind the campaign activity they are seeing. They are entitled to know whether political influence is being exercised openly or through structures that are harder to scrutinise.

That question is especially relevant when a campaign appears unusually well-resourced on the ground.

Marc Randazza joined @Excitedutterance and dives into a compelling legal battle involving Rapid Relief team and the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, accused of controlling every aspect of its members' lives. When individuals leave this exclusive group, they often lose everything—their jobs, family, and social circles. Now, the organization is attempting to use copyright claims against those speaking out about their experiences, specifically targeting the use of their charity’s logo in critical commentary. Randazza explores the intersection of free speech, alleged abuse, and the questionable use of intellectual property law to stifle public discourse.

World's snarkiest lawyer, Marc Randazza on fair use, free speech, YouTube and cults

Tonight at 7pm ET, Marc Randazza joins this channel to walk through RRT v Bawtinheimer, a case that never needed to exist, yet keeps doubling down.

There’s still time for #RapidReliefTeam and their lawyers to get the message and step back.

But that would mean admitting the obvious… and that’s clearly not on the table.

Make sure to tune in!
