Today an IG video from some healthfluencer showed up in my feed ("recommended") expressing that the nitrates in hot dogs don't REALLY cause cancer, it's what they become in your digestive track that does, so if you have plenty of fiber and don't eat too many too often you can enjoy them guilt free!
Later, driving, I hear José Andrés being interviewed on NPR regarding hot dogs, first question from the dweeb behind the mic regarding the health implications, to which (I shit you not) Andrés replies "I AM SORRY REPEAT THE QUESTION MY MOUTH WAS WATERING YOU WERE-A TALKING ABOUT THESE HOTDOGS AND MY MIND WAS MY MOUTH WAS etc" He goes on to repeat the EXACT same claptrap as the IG video lady, about how the quantity is the real issue, but you can get good QUALITY dogs too, and that it is a very ACCESSIBLE meat we should all celebrate and enjoy.
I later learn this is an extension of an article/bullshit he did with the NYT/wirecutter.
Conclusion: famine is coming! Enjoy your ground offal sleeves while you can (preferably from your local butcher (sec. Mr. Andrés)
I have several older Criterion releases, and have recently started buying newer 4K releases (and gifted my spouse the CC40 box set). There is a distinct difference in quality between the older essays and the newer, in terms of depth, style, scope, and even length. The older ones read like accessible masters-level theses, while newer ones seem like an above-average freshman's final paper in a cinema survey course. I wonder how much is due to a directive to write down to modern audiences vs. more evidence of the degradation of literary standards and criticism at large. I know this is a little haughty and above the neck, but one of the reasons I was looking forward to new releases were the essays, advertised as part of the supplemental material, and I am consistently disappointed. It doesn't help that I've worked in secondary and higher education for over a decade and have witnessed this trend pretty much everywhere.
A top three most popular campaign promise alongside ending aid to Izzy and, I dunno, free hand jobs.
Neither of us have seen the other's pick. Double header today, which should we watch first?
Heretofore unseen levels of farce
