Do me

The last thing I wrote in a print script and the last thing I wrote in cursive script. I have alphabets and pangrams that look better, where I’m paying a lot of attention to my handwriting but I wanted it to be ✨ authentic ✨
Who am I?

Handwriting Preferences

These are my two casual scripts, my print and cursive. I find myself preferring a wet nib for cursive and a less wet nib for any print script. Is this just me?

For example: my pgs mini is all I really want to write in print with and had a hard time writing in a print script with my Esterbrook. Whereas my wahl is my favorite cursive writer.

👋 Welcome to r/pocketpens - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hi, I am gouvib, the founder of r/pocketpens. As someone who loves to carry so much with me all the time, mini pens are really appealing to me. In fact, in the wild, I can always be found with at least five pens and a pencil on me at all times. Whether you have been collecting miniature pens for a long time, or just really enjoy a kwecko sport, this sub is for you!

This is our new home for all things related to small, pocket-sized stationary tools. While pocket fountain pens are the inspiration for the group, you are welcome to join us with small mechanical pencils, mini ballpoints and anything of the like. We're excited to have you!

What to Post
Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions. We would love to see the state of your mini fountain pen collection! And photos of anything you do with your mini pens, even if it's just matching it to your outfit or other EDC items!

This is not a page for buying and selling. Feel free to share or mention posts from r/Pen_Swap, but that is where the selling should happen. There are also great resources for buy questions, make sure you scroll or search the sub before asking a buy question that has already been asked!

Community Vibe
We're all about being friendly, constructive, and inclusive. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting. Sometimes the world of fountain pens will make you feel *small*, and like spending a lot of money is the only way to be serious about the hobby. We aren't doing that here. There will be no shaming or comparing collections as a way to demean others. Lets be respectful of others preferences and opinions to build a positive vibe.

How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below with your name and favorite pen! (bonus points if you also have a grail pen you're looking for, add that too!)
  2. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.
  3. If you know someone who would love this community, invite them to join.
  4. Interested in helping out? We're looking for new moderators to kick off this sub, so feel free to reach out to me to apply.

Fountain Pens versus Dip Pens

I have noticed that many people in this sub and also YouTube creators, who do calligraphy, use dip pens of some variety. Even when discussing alternative tools, most tutorials don’t even mention fountain pens. Why not? As far as flex nibs go, of course you can get a dip pen with a flex nib for much cheaper when getting into the hobby, but that can’t be the only reason.

I have been a fountain pen collector for years now and have just recently started to learn calligraphy. Despite every guide I have read and tutorial I have watched that recommends pens that are not fountain pens, I am in fact using fountain pens exclusively. I have been using a vintage fountain pen to learn copperplate. I also got a little 1.1mm stub nib to try some small blackletter this week, peep the Diamond mini in the photo.

Disclaimer: I know my spacing got a touch messed up throughout my lowercase alphabet as I lost my groove a little, but as this is only my first few days doing it, it’s my best blackletter alphabet I have produced thus far.

Anyway, is there anybody using fountain pens on these endeavors? Are there drawbacks I don’t know about?

Rotoring Espirit

Hi, I was looking for this a while back and almost spent a lot of money on a Rotoring espirit mini, especially because I like to gold… Does any company still produce little telescopic pencils? Or pocket pencils in general?

Bums me out that the market is less than saturated. I’m more of a fountain pen girl generally and there are so many more options in that arena.

New Life

While I am against overconsumption (in theory), I have found myself with many pens that weren’t being used; some that hadn’t been inked in over a year. My nearest stationary store with fountain pens is a four hour drive. So to try pens, I just buy them. I really wish pen sampling subscriptions were a thing, but I absolutely understand why they are not.

I know I could have probably parted with them on r/penswap but I am nostalgic and also, I don’t think I would have gotten much from the ones I wanted/needed to part with.

So, I have started to give pens away over the last few weeks. The first one I gave away was a Pilot Kakuno to my little sister. She was so excited to bring it home and sent me photos of her handwriting with it in her journal, and the whole experience has brought me so much joy, that I have offered family and friends pens when they visit. I am so surprised at how many people enthusiastically took a pen and meticulously chose ink colors to fill it with! I have given away some I never liked and some I have absolutely loved, like my Pilot metropolitan and my Twisbi. For the record, these are great pens (please don’t come for me!) they just aren’t ones I use anymore!

Today I gave away pens that were my every day carry some point 3-4 years ago. The pink Jinhao was my first ever fountain pen and the clear Twisbi eco was my favorite for a long time. Both pens were inked with great choices and I hope they’re treated well where their new journeys await!

New Pen Day ✨ 💜

This twisbi mini I have wanted for a while and I splurged on everything else! I got free shipping with my extra purchases, so they were basically free, right?

Techo Qs

Hi, first post on this sub!
I’ve been buying the Hobonichi weeks for years now, and recently discovered it isn’t my favorite! I just bought my first techo HON (6m) version for the second half of this year and I LOVE the size. I prefer the monthly spread and I feel like I have more space than my weeks! My techo HON does have a little overhang out of my PR grand voyager pocket, and it looked like the techo planner is a little smaller (maybe the picture is just deceiving; they’re all labeled A6). I’m wondering, for those of you that have used different versions of the techo if the paper size is actually different between the Avec the planner, and the original/HON? My weeks had more English in it, which I do prefer as well, does that limit me to the techo planner?

A Sailor Hate Post

I really want to like this pen: PGS Mini, and I think I just don’t 🤷‍♀️ I went through a period of time wondering if the nib was a fake (I got it on eBay and I thought the gold tone look muted), because I dislike it that much.

The feel/feedback feels comparable to cheap pens, like a lamy safari and pilot kakuno.

What am I missing here?

What does my EDC say about me?

I have recently stopped carrying loads of things that used to be shoved in my bag in place of new *essentials*. I have evolved into a new person this year; who is she?

Disclaimer: I have also seen people include their jewelry, so I might edit this later and add mine. They are not excluded from this picture because I do not wear jewelry.

Roller Ball inserts

Hi! I’m looking for refill recommendations! I have an aluminum kwecko sport I bought as a gift for my sister in law who is into pens, just different kinds than I am!

She normally exclusively uses a pilot roller ball with a fine tip. She admired my Esterbrook niblet and kwecko pens, so I was hoping to find something she would enjoy. The finest kwecko roller ball insert there is, is a fat .8mm!

The one she normally writes with is practically a needlepoint, but doesn’t fit in the kwecko sport (I believe). Although I haven’t tried it, I believe the pilot inserts are too long. She also likes uniball inserts but I’ve found that they leak. I also believe these are too big🙃
