Mac Pro 1.1 running Debian 13 : iso to share !

So I looked at my old MacPro 1.1 and to be honest I said "you going to live again little buddy".

He has a calmer life now that I use two MacPros for my homelab : Trashcan with 64gb and a MacPro 7.1 with several GPU for AI , the poor 1.1 was not turned on for ... years ?

So I decided to install Debian ... nada. Ubuntu. Fedora. Arch.. Omarchy... some of them booted the usb , installed and then nothing.

So I searched and google and remembered : Mac Pro 1.1 ( and up to 5.1 I think ) have the most stupid arrangement on earth : EFI32 bits and AMD64 Xeon cpus... so booting a linux AMD64 image will result in the distorted wanting to write to EFI64 which the MacPro doesn't have so... no go.

We live in a world of AI so I asked Claude Code to open up the latest Debian 13 distro ISO, inject the EFI32 boot loader ( grub ) and the install process use it.

It worked and got my MacPro 1.1 running latest Debian 13 without a problem. Apart from the idea of having only 6gb ram and slow SATA drives and consume gazzilion of watts, hey, its running.

Anyone want the iso ? Happy to share if requested.

has Claude Code increased token usage across the board lately ?

Hi there,

I'm fairly decent-ish at programming and few months ago, installed Claude Code and then quickly, I think a month after, jumped from 20$ to Max - because I could do SO many projects at the same time.

Opus 4.8 was great then came Fable.

Lord it was hungry in terms of tokens but it was awesome.

Then Fable was cut off and.... things seem different now ?

Opus 5.0 varies from all good to incredible stupid with lots of hallucinations and goes around problems that doesn't exits.

Fable is limited like hell and eats tokens like a diabetic on a candy store. Anything mildly complicated that I ask from Fable , 9 out of 10 is "oh I'm on some whatever rails and I will switch to Opus"

But the problem I'm getting hurt the most, is token usage.

I have several projects that I built with Claude. They work fine and sometimes we do need few changes.

Now I wanted to implement a new module and had an idea : that project has a big claude.md file with all the design rules, the architecture and what does and what does not.

so :

asked Opus 5.0 fresh, to read the claude, get a grip of the project and then in a long prompt what it needed to be done and give me 3 alternatives.

burned through 8% of my weekly allowance of the Max to do this in 39 minutes

asked Fable fresh, to read the claude.md etc etc and burned 14% of the allowance and did in 29 minutes. Was much more orientated and focused than Opus, which created a lot of loopholes.

then wen to to ChatGPT/Codex, used Sol 5.6 , read claude.md , EXACT same prompt. 6% of weekly allowance and 14 minutes.

I was surprised - all the alternatives are solid design wise, all work and with diference approaches - but the speed of Codex impressed be but what threw me completely off was token usage : Opus took 8% and Codex 6% to do the exact same task.

NOW THE BIG CHANGE : Claude Code is on Max plan. Codex is on a 20$ Plus plan.

So Codex use QUITE A LOT LESS tokens than Claude and it was faster.

This is because I'm under the impression that a lot of times lately, Claude Code is just slower, hallucinates a lot and tokens are never enough.

Opus 4.8 was great , Fable was awesome when it was first released but now, all models seem just... numb , half stupid and heavy token usage for menial tasks sometimes. Why ?

Radeon AI PRO 9700 ? or what is the best option ?

Hi there,

Waiting for my MacPro 2019 to arrive ( 16 core, 128gb ram ) and want to put a decent GPU to tinker with local AI LLM's.

I do not have illimited funds, so while some of you will say "slap 4 x Nvidia 6000 on that bad boi", its nice but send your credit card details first :)

That said :

- Radeon AI PRO 9700 seems a great option - boot camp'ed into Windows or Linux, since OSX doesnt not supported it. good option ?
- Intel ARC B70 same : do not see anyone using this under MacPro, why ?
- W MPX 32gb cards are downright impossibel to find at decent prices in Europe, so out of the question

what other options do I have ? would love to hear from your experiences.

yes, a PC would be smarter but I love the MP and want to use it, because of reasons :)

MacPro 2019 W5700X card under Windows : drivers are bootcamp or can install "normal" drivers from AMD ?

I did what everyone is NOT doing in 2026 : bought a MacPro 16 core, 128gb ram and comes with a W580x - the whole setup was "almost" cheap and I love the cheesegrater and want to tinker with it.

However, the man maths I justified the purchase to the wife is that can run Windows and his kid its 12 and needs a PC - to do school stuff and game a bit ( he does only 1080 gaming, Roblox, Space Marine 2, etc etc ) - so I found a w5700X at a good price, new.

I know, I do get a bit more bang for my buck if I find a reference card ( 6800Xt ) but they are a pain to find in Europe - and a w5700X to tinker with AI models and let the kid game a bit, its perfect.

Question :

- I do need bootcamp drivers to make the whole setup work in windows, but after the initial setup, I can install Adrenallin "normal" drivers for the w5700x so he can game with it etc and keep it updated ?

- can I keep the W570x and the W5700X in so when the kid is not using the MacPro ( hes only with us week in, week out ) , I can toy with ToshLLM and local I for fun ? or do I need to take the 580X out ?

- torn between a 6800XT reference card and a W5700X : both are 16gb but I get more "bang for buck" gpu processor wise from the 6800Xt , both have 16gb ... W5700X is tad slower but so much clean the install :)
