Summer Coat

Summer Coat

My girl Desi is getting groomed on Tuesday. I need suggestions on what type of cut to get that will help with the summer heat without negatively impacting her coat’s future growth. This is the first summer that she’s had a full coat. She is a former puppy mill mama and was kept shaved down. I was truly surprised that her coat recovered so well.

Pineapple Sauerkraut!!!

I don’t have a great palate because of a bad concussion many years ago that took my sense of smell away. So to me ferments are mostly just sour and salty. So I was expecting the same from this pineapple sauerkraut with ginger and turmeric. Man was I wrong! It’s so good. Has sweetness from the pineapple with salty and that ginger hits like a pungent freshly ground black pepper (a good amount). I love the layers of flavor. It’s so good. 10/10

Recipe posted below.

Sauerkraut and my mood

I made a batch of sauerkraut that was 2 parts cabbage and 1 part carrots. It fermented quickly because of the sugar content in the carrots. Was ready to go in 10 days! It tastes great, like sauerkraut with carrots should. But the weird thing is that every time I eat it I have such a good mood come over me in about 20-25 minutes. Just a deep contentment with life and the world. Every single time!!! I’ve never had such a reaction to a ferment before.

Have any of you ever had a similar experience? I know that a balanced gut helps your mental health quite a bit. But this is a fast, and very noticeable, response to this one fermentation.

Homemade sauerkraut in bean soup

I put a big spoonful of my homemade cabbage/carrot sauerkraut in my mom’s ham and bean soup. So good. If you like the flavor of adding a little acv to beans then you will love this. It adds the sourness but also gives some extra texture. Highly recommended.

***kraut was added to the bowl of soup at the table. It was not cooked in the soup.

Coat Issues and Recovery

My sweet Dougie, 10y, lost his sister last year. They were a true bonded pair and had never been apart. He lost most of his undercoat and a good portion of the top coat. His tail, back legs, stomach, and underarms were bald. I changed him to a homemade diet a couple of months ago and his undercoat is recovering slowly. But his top coat is very dry and breaks so it is much shorter than usual.

My groomer said that it can take up to a year to see positive skin and coat changes after changing their diet. Has anybody experienced anything like this with their Pom? If so how long before you started noticing real growth? I’ve already told Doug that it doesn’t matter one way or the other. But I want him to be healthy.

Also I have to say that his energy has increased to much with a better diet. It is well worth the hassle of making if your budget and time allow.

Desi came to live with me a year ago. She was 5.5 lbs and 5 years old. She has had 5 litters and was kept shaved. She lived all her life in a 2x3 crate, had muscle wasting, didn’t know her name, wasn’t potty trained, terrified of everything and everybody. She now weighs 10 lbs and her coat has miraculously recovered. She is gorgeous. While she still has some issues she and I have decided that it’s okay. I’m not going for perfection. But she’s pretty darned close. I love her so much.
