A contrasting point to Jim Lill's video

Here is a nice video from a German engineer comparing his restored and modded vintage KSG broadcast console to a clarrett octopre. The tonal differences are subtle but definitely there and make a difference, and as he points out there is some pronounced clipping / compression on transients. Its just a good reminder that Jim Lill was comparing one preamp with the scarlett, and there are pres out there that absolutely will color the sound more. The clarett sounds great too of course, and at the end of the day will not stop anyone from making good music. https://youtu.be/nut2Uodg2uc?si=u1a1_isYBStVUh92

How to make plugins behave like real hardware?

I had a session where we recorded drums into a neve desk and then printed them through the onboard 2254 compressors, and the sound of them is so thick and fantastic. But whether it be with the UA 2254 or the Arturia 33609 plugins I can't achieve the same smack and glue. The drum sounds we got were also very good so that was a part of it but I'm wondering if maybe I have to drive the plugins a certain amount to make them behave the same way? Or is there something about the transient where if the drummer isn't hitting hard enough the compressor won't respond the same? Does anyone have strategies for making software sound and behave more like the real deal?

Snare sound on Dan Mangan "Cold in the Summer"

This is the type of snare sound I feel like I've been chasing my whole engineering career... and I know the drum itself and the player are the most important things. But I'm talking about the snap on it, the slight squish. Does anyone have any idea what kind of compressor is doing that? is it on the snare or the drum bus or the whole song or all 3? its like the perfect amount of smack. its the kind of thing ive heard on countless songs but can never seem to dial in myself.
