Passed HVAC&R first time - Happy to help anyone preparing

Just found out I passed the Mechanical HVAC&R PE and wanted to thank this sub. I got a lot of useful advice here during prep, especially from people who had recently taken the exam, so I’m happy to pay it forward.

I used EPG, the official NCEES practice exam, and a lot of handbook/pattern recognition review. The exam felt rough, especially the first half, and I honestly wasn’t confident walking out. But I passed, so don’t assume a bad feeling afterward means it went badly.

Happy to answer questions on prep approach, EPG vs NCEES, timing, final-week strategy and what I was/wasn’t prepared for or expecting during the exam. I won’t discuss actual exam questions, but I can share general impressions and what I found useful.

Good luck to everyone currently in the grind - it’s a slog, but it’s doable. Happy for anyone here to DM me with specifics if more comfortable

Final prep for the HVAC&R exam next week

Hello! I’m hoping to get some insight from anyone who has taken the Mechanical HVAC&R PE recently.

My exam is next Wednesday, so I’m using this weekend for final prep before slowly winding down. I’ve been studying with the EPG test bank and the official NCEES practice exam over the last few months.

I’ve noticed some of the EPG questions seem much more involved than the official NCEES practice exam. For example, some problems require using Bernoulli, Reynolds number, Moody/friction factor, and manual fitting-loss calculations all in one question.

For anyone who has taken the HVAC&R exam recently: are those more involved EPG-style fluid mechanics questions realistic to the actual exam, or are they more of a “know the concept/template, but don’t over-invest final prep time” type of thing? Trying to make the best use of my remaining study time and focus on the areas most likely to matter.

Any other last-minute tips, advice, or general observations from recent test-takers would be hugely appreciated.

Happy for anyone currently studying or anyone who has taken it recently to DM if preferred.

Thanks to everyone who contributes here. Once I’m done (and hopefully pass!) I’ll be sure to stick around and help others who are preparing.
