Facial Keloid - What Would You Do? (Opinions, Experiences, Regrets welcome)

I have seen a dermatologist for this hard bump on my face and the general consensus was that it was a keloid from unresolved cystic acne. The thing is — I’ve never had cystic acne before. I didn’t even have pimples in high school. When it first formed I was unemployed and uninsured so I didn’t see a dermatologist. Fast forward a few months, I am now both and got in to have it checked out.

Since the consult, I’ve had 2 steroid injections. I was told after the first injection that I should see shrinkage in 2-3 days. Weeks went by and it didn’t really shrink at all. I had my second injection yesterday & it’s still just as firm and the same size.

The dermatologist says he can only do 2 more injections because they can cause long-term damage if I continued and then I’m stuck with two options (but one is kind of out of the question):

  1. I have it shaved off. This will leave me with a large, circular scar on my face forever.

  2. See a plastics specialist who can perform another procedure that will leave me with minimal scarring. However, plastic surgeons are rarely covered by insurance so I’d likely have to pay a LOT out of pocket & I don’t think my spouse would be on board due to other large financial commitments we have planned for the future.

So WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
A) keep the keloid - it’s smaller than a dime & easily covered with makeup
B) shave it off - have a large, potentially colored scar

Has anyone ever gone through anything like this? What did you do? Do you regret it?
