[SNAKE SPOTTED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DESERT]
I was cleaning the windows when I heard one of my dogs barking and saw this snake, ran outside and got the dogs inside, absolutely panicked bc it was hissing super loudly and rattling its tail but a Google search suggests it might be a Gopher Snake rather than a Rattlesnake? It had a thin, tapered tail and small head. Posting here to confirm what it is before letting my girls back outside (it crawled into the bushes.) I checked the girls for bites and they have no bites, pain, or swelling anywhere and are acting normal, snake spotted 2 1/2 hours ago so I think they're fine. If they had been bitten they would have shown symptoms by now.
It's approximately 3ft (0.9m) long. I stayed about 8ft back bc I didn't want to risk getting bitten.
