Need advice for this application cycle
Hi! So I am an American who is applying to a handful of Canadian schools this fall. I’m looking for some advice/a reality check to get a good grasp on what my best options are. I already know I want to study environmental law, with an emphasis on policy, if that helps widdle down my choices.
I graduated with a BS in Finance from a reputable Colorado business school in 2023, but my GPA is kind of dog shit; 2.9 on a 4.0 scale. I am planning to apply as a discretionary applicant, as I struggled severely with my mental health and an undiagnosed disorder, which heavily impacted my academics. Not to mention 75% of my education was online due to Covid, which also heavily impacted my ability to learn and perform to my best ability.
My most recent LSAT score is a 156 and I’m registered for the Nov test. Obviously, I need to improve my score by a decent amount still (any words of encouragement are appreciated).
EDIT: my PTs are 16high so I am confident about getting a higher score in the future.
Since getting my degree, I have not been working in my applied industry. I instead have taken the route of serving my community by being anything from a medical caretaker, to a nanny, to a household manager. I also have been a seasonal ski coach for my hometown ski team, which has meant a lot to me.
Without getting too specific, I think my personal statement is pretty darn good. I touch a lot on why I decided not to pursue a career and finance, and instead pursued my desire to be of service, which ultimately is a huge driving force behind my decision to become a lawyer. Furthermore, I have some pretty killer letters of recommendation from the director of the company I interned for in college and recent employers.
Final note if you’ve read this far :) under Bill C – 3 of the citizenship act, I am a Canadian citizen, but I don’t have documentation to show that yet. I am in the process of acquiring this documentation, but I likely won’t have it in time for submitting my applications. I am curious as to how this would impact any of my applications to Canadian schools. I know this is quite niche and out of the scope of this sub, but I figured it could be a decent place to get any information regarding that.
Thank you so much for your time and any advice you’re willing to provide :))
