A childhood memory from Mainz that I never forgot. What happened to May?

Sometimes a completely random childhood memory stays with you for more than 20 years.

I was born in 1998, and when I was in first grade in Mainz, I had a Chinese classmate sitting next to me. I remember her name as May, although it might have been Mei or Mai. I was just a little kid, so I can't be completely sure about the spelling.

She was probably the smartest and most hardworking kid in our class. I remember struggling with some of our schoolwork, and she would help me with the questions I couldn't solve. She always seemed to know the answer. 😄

There’s one little thing she used to say when she was introducing herself, somehow, I never forgot:

"

My name is May(?).

I was born in Mainz.

And in May (month).

"

For some reason, that sentence stuck with me for all these years.

The school was at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 7 in Mainz, which I believe is now called IGS Anna Seghers. I’m not sure what it was called when we were there, though.

Because of my parents, we eventually left Germany, and we completely lost touch. More than 20 years passed.

The funny thing is that, years later, I ended up moving back to Germany myself. Recently, this completely random childhood memory came back to me, and I started wondering what happened to her.

She would probably be around my age now. I wonder where life took her, what she's doing, and whether she ever remembers that little kid who used to sit next to her and ask for help with the questions he couldn't solve. 😄

I know this is a huge long shot after more than 20 years, but I thought I'd give it a try.

If anyone from Mainz remembers a girl named May / Mei / Mai from primary school around 2004–2005, or if she somehow comes across this herself. I hope you're doing well, wherever life has taken you.

And if you remember a boy sitting next to you who wasn't quite as good at the schoolwork... that was probably me. 😄
