[NJ, Bayonne] High chance of denying a couple if one has bad credit/rental history, but is not signing the lease?
My fiancé (29M) and I (24F) will be moving in together in Bayonne, New Jersey next month due to him getting a great job offer. We are a few states away currently and both live at home (just got engaged two weeks ago)!
But… I have a 640 credit score, $50k in student debt, and a past eviction four years ago from college (I had to move back home due to a family emergency, switched colleges, it was a horrible time period).
My fiancé, however, has $0 debt, a “perfect” credit score, “perfect” renting history, etc. He makes $175k and I make $80k.
We will be touring many apartments this week (all “luxury” apartment buildings, as is his preference) and I’m so nervous about the application process. He will be the sole signer, as he makes the necessary 3-4x income and will be paying. So we will only be applying with me as an occupant, not applicant.
Should I reach out before touring asking if they do a credit/rental history check on occupants not on the lease? Is that suspicious? How open should I be about my history beforehand? I hate to fall in love with an apartment only to not be able to be approved.
All advice appreciated please, thank you so much.
TLDR; My fiancé has perfect credit, I have history of debt and rental eviction/paid collection. He is solely paying for the apartment. Are the chances high that they deny us even if I’m just an occupant?
