I've noticed an interesting occurrence in my accent (southern New Jersey) where the pronounciation my price vowel is very different depending on the following consonant. Before a voiceless consonant, it undergoes Canadian raising, going from [aɪ] to [ɐɪ]. Anywhere else, it lowers from [aɪ] to somewhere from [aɛ] ~ [a:]. This makes what should be one phoneme become two very distinct allophones.

Examples:

  • Rite - [ɹɐɪt̚]
  • Ride - [ɹaɛd̚] ~ [ɹa:d̚]

Are there other accents that do the same or similar changes to one of its diphthongs, and where can I find more info about this?
