free roaming advice

i've had my gerbils (tofu and noodle) for six weeks and they're fairly shy though happily take treats from my hand, let me stroke them if they're eating or gnawing on something, and last week noodle climbed out of the front opening and went onto my arms and chest and has done this several times whereas tofu has only done this a couple of times. anyway, because they're quite shy and skittish i haven't had them free roam yet as a) i didn't want to cause any additional stress and b) they aren't comfortable with being picked up.

now that i've had them longer and they're quicker to warm up to me after their standard initial shyness and i'm more confident with them, i was thinking it would be a good time to let them free roam in a smaller space such as my bathtub as i've seen people suggest that. i was wondering if anyone has used their tub for free roaming and if so, what suggestions/recommendations you have? i will put cardboard in there, as both things to chew on and places to hide, and their wheel (which they've never actually used for anything but a toilet lol) but am unsure if something needs to be put across the tub itself as the surface might be slippery for them?

any help is appreciated! (photo of tofu as tax)

new enclosure

i've had my gerbils for a couple of weeks and want to upgrade their enclosure to the bucastate 3.0. the only worry i have is that they're still fairly skittish (some days more so than others but i haven't been able to pick them up yet) and i'm worried that the stress of being put in their carrier and then into a new enclosure will be bad for them. i'm unsure whether i should wait a bit until they're, hopefully, more comfortable with me (though i know this could take months) or just get the new enclosure now and continue my hand taming and exposure as i am currently doing

thumping/drumming

i've had my babies for a grand total of 48 hours and today they (especially little tofu) have been burrowing lots which is very exciting, but it's at the back of the tank where i can't see. i was curious about what it looked like so slowly moved the tank a bit so i could see it and this spooked them so bad bc since moving it back they've been back and forth non-stop thumping/drumming for like 20 minutes and i feel so so bad and am worried about moving or making any kind of noise and scaring them further. tofu has now come out from the tunnel but is still thumping 😭😭
