Homeschooling because schools do absolutely nothing to keep kids safe in an ongoing pandemic.

Let me first recognize the immense privilege it is to even have the option to homeschool, let alone being able to access the physical and/or economic capabilities to even make it possible. I teach at home during the week, and because I have the weirdo job that enables me to work on the weekend, those two worlds can graciously coexist.

That said my friends, I feel like I’m getting hit with an extra dose of reality this past week due to the fact that back in 2021 I started kindergarten with my oldest at home while holding my newborn only two months old in my arms learning how to homeschool and take care of an infant at the same time. This month, the oldest is entering fifth grade still homeschooling and that newborn is now starting kindergarten at the same table where they were downing milk bottles five years prior.

When I had my oldest we never set out to be a homeschooling family, and this lifestyle choice was in direct reaction to schools doing absolutely nothing except “recommended masking” when kids went back to school in this area in Fall 2021. Like many of you here I saw the writing on the wall for how that was going to work, and for the past five years I’ve watched the absolute neglect that institutions who profess to care for children display while they continue to do nothing to adapt in the slightest.

I feel an extra dose of grief this past month further sitting with the fact of knowing that as of summer 2025, Long Covid became the number one chronic illness in kids and that didn’t even move the needle at all. I know life is hard for everybody and everyone has individual circumstances of struggle that many of us know nothing about. Parents especially have the impossible task of raising children in late stage capitalism amidst climate collapse, the birth of American fascism, and even though the vast, vast majority don’t know it or will acknowledge it, yes, an ongoing pandemic whose ripple effect makes everything worse for them as well.

That said, I know I’m not the only one here who has years at this point of trying to educate parents of the dangers of Covid while their kids continually get sick while searching for every other reason why that might be other than damaged immune system systems in tandem with repeated infections.

I feel like I’m forever changed knowing that not having the information is one thing, but when parents do have the information still choose to not educate or teach kids about masking while normalizing the societal harm both to other children and their own by not doing so. It really does feel like a nightmare for me that I don’t know if I ever will be able to fully process. It’s so sad and I wish there was some way we could protect these kids who have no leadership in this lane of life at home or at school. This neglect also creates unsafe spaces for so many children who would thrive in a group educational environment, and I have a lot of grief for not only my kids, but all kids being removed from those same opportunities.

I’m not looking for a solve here, but I do appreciate your time listening as I know I’m not the only parent that finds themselves in this impossible situation of knowing what a lot of your life is going to look like in regards to education at home for many years save for some societal shift or medical miracle raising by Covid aware kids in a world that doesn’t even want to know they exist.

Solidarity to all the parents and everybody fighting against the overwhelming tides of denial. I know how demoralizing it is to have your knowledge and adaptive skills pathologized despite the immense care and empathy towards society and self that you continually choose to exude. We are the pioneers.

For the kids going back to school this Fall as the lone maskers…you and all children deserve so much better. But until then, please know that I (and a lot of other people you don’t know) are very proud of you. 🤘😷🤘

Camper van freshwater tank shelf life.

Hi everybody, new time the game I’ve gotten in the habit of sanitizing my freshwater tank and lines twice a year before winterizing it to avoid line freeze in November.

Having recently sanitized it in May and filled it up a few times since, last week we had a huge heat wave and the water has been sitting in there fully filled without being used and I can’t find any clear answers online whether or not that means it it’s gone bad or I should replace it because it’s gotten so hot while it sat there in stagnant heat.

It was filtered with a Camco in-line filter before going directly into the tank, and before I go through that whole process of cleaning and sanitizing again wanted to see if you think it’s still safe to drink despite the big temperature shift. Thank you!

Assaulted for wearing a mask.

It’s taken a bit for me to come down from the shock and acknowledge what happened, but last week I was kicked and tripped from behind in a grocery store which I’m 99.9% sure was due to me wearing a respirator mask in public.

After going down, I stood up and looked behind me into what was way too much white on both the tops and the bottom of the eyes telling me that this individual trying to fight me in the deli aisle was not playing with a full deck of Marvel trading cards, and so I quickly walked away.

Very thankfully, I was by myself and my girls weren’t with me.

Why am I sharing this?

If and when you have seen people talk about anti-mask hate online and you find it hard to believe, believe them. It’s taken me 6+ years to experience in real time and while I never doubted that other people were truthfully documenting their own experience, as with all things it’s different when it happens to you.

The denial of our ongoing pandemic has been so toxic a wrecking ball on so many different levels even stretching to bleach the corners of hearts previously thought unreachable of the kindest among us to act in unexplainable ways.

I wish I could ask people not masking or currently taking mitigations if even for a brief moment to please ask themselves if and how they might have contributed to behaviors and attitudes like what I and too many continue to experience becoming more commonplace in public. Being pointed at in public, having pictures taken of you alone and/or with kids when they think you’re not looking, and the immediate noticing of distain and being barely tolerated in a public space are not uncommon experiences by those of us still practicing community care. Dare I say, even tolerated the further we get from what was once thought of to be a functional public health apparatus.

As for me, I’ll be fine after a few days of partial numbness in my leg died down. I’m reminded as with all assaults that too many don’t get the chance to walk away without more intense scarring to the body and the heart simply by existing in society in an unpopular albeit adaptive way.

In my case and in cases similar it is a reminder of what has been pushed down so deeply that more and more we can no doubt expect to see a pressure cooker release of more of this kind of behavior manifest. A behavior of which is a real time symptom born of the fact that we refuse to acknowledge our collective failure in proactively managing a virus that from every angle is slowly dismantling the framework of what is considered acceptable both publicly and privately the more we live in denial of its ongoing harm.

Stay safe out there.

Heck Brewing - Silver Linings IPA

As described…”bitter, balanced, and full body with notes of spruce, mandarin, and pineapple.”

Spruce and mandarin stick out to me most, while also very light on the hop profile and very bitter.

A good mouth feel and drinks more like a pale due to the light finish though described as an IPA. I don’t know if I’ll order again, but it was a nice change of pace from the heavier hopped NA IPAs and I always like supporting the little guy…especially if they’re from Portland…especially if they have a great logo. 🤘

New Covid Conscious themed music out today from nerd rock artist Kirby Krackle - “Not Going Back” and “We’ve Come So Far” from the Shooting Holes In The Dark EP.

https://kirbykrackle.bandcamp.com/album/shooting-holes-in-the-dark-ep

LYRICS:

And if you find yourself in places that you hardly recognize
If everyone around you seems to have gone and lost their mind
The kind of thing that keeps you questioning your sanity
At least what's left of it, making sure your parts didn't leak
What would it take to make you break and pretend everything was fine?

I'm keeping slow-dancing in the wintertime
Sitting home rocking Vs, Ten, and Nevermind
Popsicles in the summertime
Looking 'round at everything I wanna keep but I'm...

Not Going Back
To the time that didn't work before
I know it's hard
'Cause the gas is lit on fire
Mourning a world
That we know don't exist anymore
Not Going Back
Yeah, we're not going back

There's a walled garden past outer dome
Past the place everybody broke
Where we're going now, yeah nobody knows
I've never been one to turn the other cheek
Yeah, I've seen what I've seen
Yeah, you know what I mean

I'm keeping making eggs on the weekend
Not plans for a time to never be again

Not Going Back
To the time that didn't work before
I know it's hard
'Cause the gas is lit on fire
Mourning a world
That we know don't exist anymore
Not Going Back
Yeah, we're not going back

The Covid Aware Community is no Monolith, but we’re at an Intersection Deserving Discussion.

Friends hope you're having a good day COVID aware community we got to come to Jesus on something uh this is gonna be messy I don't know what the answer is but I'm pretty sure I know what it's not at least for my money I want to start this conversation and see how you feel about it as well we know wastewater levels are lower than they've been forever like back to March 2020 amazing yes awesome yes The concern is that I see a lot of people who have been very COVID aware, very COVID informed, clean air advocating for years and years now, choosing this as the point to back off of mitigations and self and community care. By masking less in public areas, by jumping into Reddit posts and encouraging people to cut the cord, inferring that people are being, are practicing mitigations too much now, that wastewater levels are down while also all the things are still swirling. And It's a messy thing, right? We each are gonna come to a level where we're gonna mask less over time, or not. It doesn't have to be. I've been thinking about the fact that I think we're seeing kind of two camps that are starting to kind of like, make their way down different lanes in the COVID Aware community. People that have been doing the work up until this time, and then if I may, if I'm interpreting this correctly, have certain happenings where they're like, okay, now this is my out. This is my off ramp of participating in the COVID Aware community or considering myself move that community anymore and such. And then there are the people that are choosing to take this moment to perhaps regroup, to perhaps take not their gas off the pedal of mitigations or community care or advocating for masking continually, but to know like, okay, maybe I can go have my dental visit with being a little less concerned now. Maybe I can move plus life testing down from seven to five days, whatever it is people are doing. Shifts in praxis, not stopping praxis. And I feel, I had a dream the other day, our community, like we're on this ladder, we're holding on, but the rungs are starting to slip. And I just want to remind you that no matter where you are in this community, if you're feeling a self-pressure, if you're feeling a capitalist pressure, the patriarchy is coming down, your workplace is coming down on you, that you don't have to look for an off-ramp. For doing the hard work. You could use this time to regroup. You can use this time to think further about whatever, if whatever RAM of brain space is available to you, what can I do more to help my community? If some of my brain space is available more, some of my heart space is available more, what can I do to be prepared for whatever comes next or when case counts get worse again, or if they don't get worse again, and they just kind of maintain here because I find it, I don't want to say the word silly. It's not that, I don't want to put like a judging label on it. I find it confusing why if you have built a lifestyle up until this point where you know certain things, where you know about the intersectionality of things, especially if you're someone like me, a cishet white guy who was the front man of a rock band and now does this. Like talk about a 180 in interfacing with life. When you know better and you know how to do better and you know that there's always going to be people that are going to feel on the outs, why is that not something that we can further commit to? Why is it that we have to look for our moment, it seems, as systemically failed as we've all been, to see what our offshoot is versus I'm here now? I've learned how to do this. I know there's people that are always gonna be needed to be protected. I know there's always gonna be a need for clean air. I know there's always gonna be a need to teach other kids and families that perhaps don't have the privilege to access masks or family with a knowledge base about how to protect themselves from COVID. There's always gonna be teachers that are needed. There's always going to need to be advocates in the workplace, if not for you or the people that are there for the next group that's coming in. That's going to need to maybe not feel brave enough to fight for clean air mitigations on their own, but that greatly benefit from from a pre-funk of those mitigations for your effort or the effort of people around you. This is not a problem that's going to go away. Case counts might come down. Wastewater might get better. But it's not just about COVID. It's about measles. It's about RSV. It's about everything else that's here and coming. And if we want to commit to building the world that we want, it's going to take doing it when it really doesn't feel sexy to or when it really feels like maybe we're going to be missing out. Not to say you can't live your life. Not to say that you can't have fun. But I just ask people that have been doing the work this entire time to maybe take a look at what is moving you to move away from this community, or if you were creating cleaner safe spaces that now you're thinking about masks optional, why is that? Where's that voice coming from? Is it out there? Is it here? What might've changed? And because the external world changes, because case counts might be better, because summer's here, because it's nicer out, because all these new opportunities that hurt to not take advantage of are circling around again. Does it necessarily mean that we need to abandon what we know? This is a messy one. It's always messy. This feels especially messy where we are right now in this community. I'm tripling down. Curious where you're going to be. Thanks for the conversation. Take care.
